C5 x7 eats tyres!!

Hi guys.

I don't understand why but I'm always changing my front tyres due to excess wear on the inside edge on both sides the pressure is fine as I check and top up regularly any ideas why this is or what to check first.

I must be changing them every 4-5 months due to this problem

My car is a 2009 1.6 hdi c5
Milage just over 110k miles.

Too much negative camber will cause the tyres to wear on the inside edge - especially if this is happening on both of the fronts equally. Wheel alignment / tracking - laser or otherwise is only as good as the operator or the equipment - a fact that I had to point out to ATS on one occasion when I had my new front tyres tracked using their 'state of the art' laser alignment kit. Within 2 months, my tyres had worn completely unevenly on one side on both the fronts. As it turned out, they didn't know how to balance a C5 properly (the technician from Citroen had to come across and show them). Secondly, on this particular occasion, their 'Carlos Fandango state of the art' laser alignment kit was actually at fault as it wasn't calibrated properly and they closed it down after many complaints from people bringing their cars back for similar issues. I had a new set of tyres fitted by them free of charge as a result - BUT only after I haggled with the Manager saying it was unreasonable after only 2000 miles for the tyres to be in this condition - after ATS supplied, balanced and tracked the tyres - and I proved that my car was regularly serviced by the main dealer - so they couldn't argue. In addition, I went to national Tyres and asked them to provide me with a written report from their machine on the settings and took this to ATS as further proof that their kit has been at fault. Thereafter, I took my car to National Tyres for a while for my tracking requirements - until they stupidly decided to stop fitting customer-supplied tyres! So I went back to ATS after assurance that their machine was working properly!

So don't always put your trust in the 'experts'. Find a place that does the job properly - and stick with them.

That will be a tracking problem. When having the alignment checked, make sure they are using the correct settings for the car. My experience of laser trackers is positive but any equipment can be used incorrectly.

Or the front lower swivel joints are knackered. Or you like going round roundabouts enthusiastically!

Will have a good look at the lower front swivel joints will check for perished/damaged rubber and excessive movement

Will also try a different tyre place. It wouldn't be so bad if this wasn't the 3rd set I've had in just over a year.

All the above aside, and barring all the above issues, I have always found that C5s eat front tyres. I used to do about 17k miles a year and would change the fronts 2-3 times during this period - even wear - just a combination of the windy, uneven, gravel roads we have in the part of Wales where I am based - lucky to find a bit of tarmac anywhere!

I find that tyres - at least the fronts - only last a year on my C5 (MK1). I don't do any miles per year.
er..., just looked and it was 18,000 between tyre changes (MOT time) about 10,000 more than I expected

I do a fair few miles 25k a year but changing roughly every 8k is a bit extrem though ain't it.
I buy mid range tyres so can't put it down to bad rubber.

Last set was 24K, just changed them, I don't know how you guys are driving.

I am not slow in my cars either, maybe the auto gearbox stops the wheel spins ?

I don't push my car normally sit around 60-65 but once a week or so like to drive @ 70 to help keep her clean and running properly.
I normally drive down A roads also

Well this subject made me think about seeing how the Pirelli P7s I had fitted 5 months/5000 miles ago were doing.
Fronts are on 6mm and rears are on 7mm.
They will have had 7 to 8mm when they were new so they're doing pretty well on the face of it (and I don't drive like my dad all of the time).

My c5 eats fronts under normal driving conditions. Lowering the car helped though. I was doing 15k for a set.

Hi guys,

I have recently hit a curb on a country side with my front left HS tyre. The steering wheel is now tilt with like 10 degrees to the left. The car doesn't pull at all. I think the caster alignment will fix it. My MOT is due now and I wanna know if I can pass it with this problem. I have a Citroen C5 X7 saloon 59 reg. thanks.

It depends if there's any damage obvious to the tester I think, if there's a clearly bent track rod or wishbone/torn dust boots or loose ball joint, damage to tyre or wheel etc then it'd fail, however I don't think it'd fail just for having the tracking out. I would get it looked at and put right as soon as possible though as it'll munch tyres like they're going out of fashion;)
