What's the First Dream Car You Would Buy?
Thought this could be interesting.
So hypothetical situation, you've just won the Lottery (or for some other unexplored reason have ended up in a situation where money is no object for those of you who find such things objectionable), and the question is simple. What's the first car you would go out and buy. Can be new, old, or anything in between.
Easy one for me at the moment...and as someone who considers himself a pretty traditional petrol head it's a bit of a surprise for me.
Tesla Model S P100D. In the dark metallic blue colour, tan leather, dark ash wood trim, panoramic sunroof and all of the toys.
Been a long while since I've seen a car that is just such a nice place to be and such a nicely thought out package.
Yes, performance is a factor as well. I've been lucky enough to experience a full throttle launch in one with the Ludicrous Mode option - and I can tell you that it is aptly named and does rather recalibrate your perception of acceleration. The fact that it is possible for as large a luxo-barge to launch itself that rapidly defies belief, and the fact that it does it in utter silence just makes it all the more uncanny.
It's a hundred grand car, but having seen one up close I can say that if I'd paid that for one that I wouldn't have felt that I'd been in any way short changed.
There'd be a load of others that I'd no doubt end up picking up as well, but the Tesla is the first one I'd be picking up.
...Never thought I'd see the day that I would actually want an electric car...never mind it being that high on the wish list.

I'd try to buy Guy Martins Volvo Amazon that was built by Mattias Vocks.

Re: What's the First Dream Car You Would Buy?
A JBM roadster, properly fettled (ideally the one with the BMW chassis and the 2.5l Jaguar engine). JB was Jim Boothby, my Great Uncle and Godfather (and whom I am named after). He started up his own car company (Jim Boothby Motors), and produced several cars that were (amongst other things) quite rapid (well, he did like fast, agile cars). Somewhat poignant at the moment, as his wife Sylvia (my Great Aunt, who took over god parenting when Jim died) passed away 24th August 2016. I am off to her funeral tomorrow.

Re: What's the First Dream Car You Would Buy?
Right now, I would just go to Leominster on 20th September, second class on the train, view the classics in the Brightwells Auction, stay in Leominster's cheapest and worst hotel, go to the auction Wednesday 21st and outbid the competition for this......
...make sure my AA membership was up to date, and have a slow pootle home stopping off in Manchester, before driving to the Pickled Egg in St Helens for a photo shoot, and a half pint in a dirty glass, and onwards, turning off at Kendal, up through Bowness Windermere and Ambleside, and pausing at Grasmere for some gingerbread and another photo shoot of the Rover next to the AA box at Dunmail Rise.
...thinking again maybe all that could be done with a fairly modest win on the lottery!
Regards Neil

Re: What's the First Dream Car You Would Buy?
Not too much to ask, Neil. Go for it!
On the fantasy front, put me down for a Tesla as well. Perhaps we can negotiate a discount for quantity.
In the meantime, the 2.5 XM is every bit a perfect replacement for my old 3500S, with even better roadholding - like driving on railway lines. Citroen did really well to make a four-pot so smooth (those clever balancer shafts).
Can't beat a V8 for being able to pull away from idling, though, and the rather special exhaust note, the more so on the automatic. Under-bonnet sound consisted chiefly of an induction whooooosh, and the muted thrum of power. Even better once the power-sapping engine fan had been ditched in favour of a Kenlowe pair.

Re: What's the First Dream Car You Would Buy?
I wouldn't mind a 2.5 XM if I could afford to pay someone to repair it for me, I ran 2.1 estates for over 15 years and I could just about manage those but the 2.5 is nothing like as easy to work on and I'm a lot older.

It would also have been originally built in Newport Pagnell
Odd that I live so near the A-M Heritage works but have no desire to own one...

Re: What's the First Dream Car You Would Buy?
Even if such a car cost me a million pounds it would still get driven and enjoyed. I would never buy a car to hide it in a garage and never see it or use it.

Re: What's the First Dream Car You Would Buy?
Utterly agreed, one of the reasons I miss one of my mates back Up North was that he was "rather well off" and had a small fleet of exotic cars - Rolls Silver Spirit, Ferrari Daytona and the first car he bought new - a 1981 Ford Escort 1.3L 2-door estate. Those were the resident cars, but he always had three or four others around at any time that he'd have for a few months to a year before swapping for something new. These ranged from relatively normal but nice cars like a Jag XJS, a Model-T Ford, to a 50s Pink Cadillac, ranging right up to a Ferrari F-40.
He always made a point of driving all of them, and also made a point of letting those he trusted also get to drive them. To him getting to share the experience of cars like that was a huge part of owning them.
I really do shudder to think what some of the stuff he let me loose in was worth!
The only cars he would never let anyone else drive were the Daytona and the Escort.
F-40 by the way, unlike many "poster cars" is every bit as good as you would think. It'd be on my list, Tesla would still be at the top of the list though!

I'd love to Davie! Sadly haven't heard from him in years, one of those sad cases of being someone I knew via someone else and only had a (now defunct) mobile number for. Never seen them since the pub and garage I used to see them at shut down. Shame as cars aside I'd love to get back in touch!
