MOT fail or not??

Unread post by superloopy »

Daughters C1 has just failed the mot because her passenger door lock doesnt work on the key from outside. She just leans across and lifts and locks on the inside plip. The door dies open and shut just fine. Just wondering if anyone in the know can confirm that this is an actual fail and under what section? Thx.

'tis all a bit vague, there are many who interpret it in whatever way suits them and to get a definite answer from the authority will usually get you an "Only the courts can interpret the law." reply.

I have NEVER seen a MOT tester try the locks, seen them open every door (to test seat belts) but never seen them with the key out trying the locks.

Ditto that, as long as they can be opened from outside and latch safely when closed they don't care if they lock or not, never had any tester lock or unlock the car.

As long as the door can be opened from outside it will not fail. Locking the door had nothing to do with the mot.

Ask the mot test station for a VT17 form and get the ministry to decide. They will act quickly - come to the mot station - retest the car - give a correct verdict - offer guidance to said mot tester

Go to the tester and ask them what they do about cars with no external locks visible (and a failsafe one hidden under a cover on the drivers side)

Ditto all the above, never heard of this ever. I think the tester is being over zealous or he's new and isn't interpreting the standards properly!

There is nothing about locks and locking, only that the door is actually secured to the vehicle when open and closed, inother words, isn't hanging off or being held shut by a bit string for example (and an extreme example)!

The only thing you can fail the locks on is if they don't unlock at all, so passengers can't safely get out.

Here's the relevant extracts:
B. Doors
1. Open and close the driver’s and passenger’s doors. Check that:
a. each door latches securely in the closed position
b. the driver’s and front passenger doors can be opened from both inside and outside the vehicle
c. any other passenger doors can be opened from outside the vehicle.
2. Check door hinges, catches and pillars for presence, security and condition.

Reasons For Rejection:
1.
a. A driver’s or any passenger’s door does not latch securely in the closed position
b. a driver’s or front passenger’s door cannot be opened from both inside and outside the vehicle using the relevant control in each case
c. a passenger door cannot be opened from outside the vehicle using the relevant control.
2. A door hinge, catch or pillar missing, insecure or deteriorated to the extent that a door cannot be readily opened or closed.

Thanks guys ... she has now advised me that she didnt get a fail sheet (are they still issued?) but i've had a quick look at the fail online and it looks like its the very last item on the previous post ... item 2. Her rear passenger door, not NSF door lock!) button is EXTREMELY stiff. Apparently the guy didnt want to pull it up any harder for fear of breaking it! But it does come up and the door is then ok. But .. i suppose it needs fixing so any ideas why it should be sticking. OSR is as light as a feather. NSR needs a good old heave-ho [emoji20]

Ideally if it's locked and not deadlocked and child lock is off it should unlock when you try and open it from the inside...

I think the OP said it was the front passenger door which won't have child locks and you wouldn't have the car doors locked during an MOT test :-D
