They do have a limit to how many read / write cycles each memory cell can do, though. In most cases, that will kill them first. The firmware is designed to distribute data evenly across all the addresses, and reserve cells are available on the better drives, but they are arguably not really suitable for high volume transfer.

I never defrag any hard disks... I don't believe it is necessary now with modern OSs and filesystems..

Good, it is bad for the SSD however.

(if you ever use one with that "stuff".....Indexing needs to be turned off in windows as well btw...

Gents ... can i interject plz. Can anyone advise why my boot times have gone from minimal ie seconds to maximal ie ten minutes since i stupidly accepted an upgrade to win 10 pro. Was running 8.1 pro and have a week left to revert. Just seems to thrash the disk remorselessly now but why? What has changed.... apart from everything [emoji1]

In my experience Win10 boots to the login screen very quickly and then takes a few minutes to log in fully and be ready for sensible work. This applies to upgrades and new builds equally. AV seems to be the biggest performance killer but have a look at task manager and see what's consuming all the resources...

I wanted to mention something I've noted. This is a bit of a longish explanation but its easier this way to cover it all.

Scenario:

Win7 Pro upgraded to Win10 Pro. This was done a few days after "real" release, so no 'beta' versions.

After it had been alive a few days and auto activated, I wiped it and did a clean install as I was due a clutter tidy anyway.

Via GP I have it set to auto download and install all updates. To cut this down a bit its designed to download them and if a restart is needed it holds off till the middle of the night. This way I'm not interrupted. This is something I've done since the XP days.

With me so far ? Good.

I do not use the 'MS' account its a local account and that's all that's permitted, again enforced via LSP.

Now the issue:

Although it does update with everything, it does not update the build. My build was 10xxx, I only noted this when I did a fresh install on another machine with a fresh download, this was build 14xxx.

No updates were available for this. It seems that if you use a local account only and do not have it linked or use beta / preview builds you may not get these.

The solution to this was to simply use the 'upgrade' tool to download the upgrade (quite large) and then let it install. I'm not sure it would work from an .iso unless you extracted the setup file (not difficult)

Summary is you may want to check your build if you only have local accounts. The changes although appearing minor are worth it. To check if you did not know, either press Windows+R or open a command prompt and type in WINVER <press Return> , alternative method is Settings > System > About
