Car fails I see at work……

Post by waynedance »

This Astra came in because his brakes did not work, he had asked about his brake pedal not feeling right a few weeks before but wanted a price. I told him the car needed looking at first to see what the fault was.

He only booked the car in due to the front brake caliper Pistons popping out and loss of brake fluid.

Some people should not have cars, said he heard no noise from the brakes [emoji33]
Had a car seat in the back as well, in his late 40's and mommy paid for his repairs.

This was an Xantia from a few years back, his pad disappeared and lost his pedal due to fluid loss.

No one could accuse me of being OCD where car maintenance is concerned, I consider myself quite lackadaisical but compared to the above quite nitpicky.

Had to bite my tongue when the chap picked up the Astra I did say surprised you have not caused and accident and you would have heard the brakes grinding for ages, he was not phased. To* *er.

That is absolutely shocking and amazing! The owners must have known there was a severe problem long before it got that bad surely?

You would have thought so, ignorance is bliss.

If you caused a fatal accident would it be manslaughter with those faults?

Unless they was doing very high mileage I am surprised that the MoT centres didn't pick up on the brakes. Surely they would have been below minimum thicknesses a year or so ago?

Probably had it MOTed the same place as a Jag a mate of mine bought. Had nearly a year's test on it, yet the floorpans weren't actually attached to the sills by anything more than paint and newspaper.

Shocking to see that...

Have to wonder what other neglect induced faults that Astra has...

Problem with the mot and brakes is the mot is only a visual inspection of what can be seen at the time of test.

This car had wheel trims which covered a great deal of the wheel and could not see the brakes hence why the last mot (done somewhere else) did not advise anything. The brake roller readings would I have guessed passed.

Working at an MOT Station I can honestly say some folk regard the mot as a service. Lots of people phone up to say my brakes have worn out or something similar months after the test and ask why was it not highlighted. [emoji53]

I don't want to defend any of these people, but it can be easy to get almost to that stage. When I was doing mad mileages in my C4 VTS one of the rear calipers siezed and by the time I got it in to be replaced one of the pads was almost down to the backing plate. It took me ages to get the brake dust off the wheel afterwards!
