How good are the 2liter hdi engine on small runs

Post by jacksun1987 »

Hi my anty trying to get a car for under 500 pounds she got a 206 1.2 petrol but going to cost loads for mot I found a 206 2liter hdi on auto trader in Wakefield but I got shouted at lol by my grandad and anty saying she's doing short runs she doesn't want a diesel but I think a 2liter hdi would be good because it lower to tax then most petrol better on fuel and she lives at Cleckheaton where there's hills if she did get a 2liter hdi engine in a small car or even a 1.6hdi or the dci how good are they on stop start short runs etc thanks jacko

I have a 2L HDi that does 16 miles a day in four four mile trips.

While it hasn't suffered any noticeable harm I'm sure it isn't any good for it, although it does get a few long runs to the rallies.

The economy I get is rubbish although managed to get 49.8mpg on last weeks run to Huntingdon, a little over 400 miles round trip, I normally get 34mpg.
I used to do lots of miles, hence the choice of an HDi but if replacing it I would go for a petrol engine now*, particularly with all the moaning about emissions and a likely hike in the cost of diesel and the RFL.

*there is a possible SAAB 900 cabriolet in the offing, no more economical but increased fun to compensate.

Get a 1.4 petrol 206. I've got a 1.4 petrol 207, currently averaging 50.3mpg on the trip computer over a variety of roads. There's loads loads loads of 206s or Xsaras with the same 1.4 in them.

I'm sure hers is a 1.2 or even a 1.4 the back axel as gone on it she only likes small cars and can only drive small cars I think a xsaras would be a good one for her but she might say it's to big that's only a couple of inches bigger then the 4 door 206 she has or had

If the rest of the car is good you can get the axle replaced for around £300 with a recon unit.

Anything with the 8 valve 2.0. PSA diesel will be good, even on short journeys it will be better than a petrol, it has no DPF to clog up and relatively easy to repair. I would suggest a 206 but make sure it has the 2.0. 8 valve engine.

I have to disagree here. The 1.4 Petrol in my 207 is much nicer to drive around town, and more economical than the 2.0HDi that's in my Berlingo. It also warms up a lot quicker, which is important in winter!

The problem with petrols and short journeys is they never warm up enough to dry out engine condenstation.. This then builds up in the form of mayonayse in the breather pipes and under the oil filler and causes all havoc..

1.9d or xud td are possibly the best round town as diesels do not cause and create this mayo issue on short trips..

Why don't they? Surely if they run colder and take longer to warm up - as my experience with various PSA HDi engine shows, they obviously don't warm up as fast as the petrol engines. I don't see the mayo issue on them though, you're right. I wonder why.. my 207 is free of Mayo, and had the headgasket done 2 years ago (it's only done 75k now) .

I can only speak from experience and that has been that my 406 Hdi estates average around 50mpg and even when only used locally they manage the high 40s, on a decent journey 60mpg+.

I think you are right on the petrol thing Ben. Hdi heater and temp gauge takes ages to get up.
Jazz 1.4 is only minutes before heat comes out and temps are normal.
