Re: "The Pickled Egg"-your virtual local

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

.....the Landlord of the Pickled Egg, following an inspiring visit to the Dentist's waiting room, and its pile of magazines, is considering what sort of artwork would add interest to the pub.

Now the pile of magazines, included a copy of "Cycling Weekly" and from recent threads there are definitely a fair few cyclists who call in at the Pickled Egg. So to cater for the "Lycra Pound" a bit of cycling artwork may add interest. So a dilemma arises......should the Pickled Egg go for a Johnny Helms print, or a Frank Patterson print. Possibly tucked away discretely in the ladies or gentleman's cloakroom.

Anyway here's one from Johnny followed by a one from Frank

..Course Frank did do a Pickled Egg special of his Whitsun Tour
An evocative pen and ink drawing dated 1928, when inns and hotels welcomed cyclists and made special provision for them, like the storage of bicycles and when bed and breakfast in a Cyclists’ Touring Club appointed premises was available for 5/6 (30p). The landlord of The Pickled Egg Inn (1928 :!: ) is seen welcoming the two riders who, dressed in plus four suits (one even has a bowtie!) are treated as old and valued guests. Patterson’s passion for detail is renowned, and the closely observed architectural and bicycle detailing is meticulous. On close examination of the drawing one is constantly reminded how well he knew his subject.

A suggestion for the jukebox.

Samantha Fish! There is a minor novelty aspect to this - the cigar box guitar.
There is no mistaking the talent she has though, among other things

Shame about her dead mike but her playing is just superb.

Also, Gov' Mule and Grace Potter:

The blues were probably underrepresented on the original 200 although Muddy waters did make it...theres a few gaps to put your selections in now due to certain of the vids no longer being available. Enjoyed the clips.

and a variation on the same theme....Trouble by Elvis

Never slow to seize a business opportunity, or to invest to bring in more trade, the Landlord of the Pickled Egg has installed a new sign.

Hopefully it will bring in the lucrative "AA Village sign spotter" tourist over the summer months.

Good to see the Pickled Egg sports a nice new sign Neil :D

For those of us who enjoy classical music how about:

And

Saint-Saëns is French ;)

And even:

For the jukebox...

That'll do for now. All good rousing stuff!

On that theme Jim I offer:

The best version of this ever:

Bought the LP in 1976.
Bought it again just last week thinking I was buying a CD - there is no CD :(

This takes some beating too:

If you like Finlandia then you will probably love Karelia

And on a different theme:

The Landlord of the Pickled Egg has always looked to innovate, and quash the image of the Public House as a mere "Boozer". These days in the summer, it’s no longer enough to open the window another notch come a spell of sunshine; potential customers have myriad alternatives and a multitude of sweeteners dangling their wares at our spending power, so we have to try that bit harder to win support – and to keep it.

Undoubtedly the Pickled Egg Juke Box is a world leader, and its seasonal selections legendary. The new sign on the gable end is already capturing the tourist trade, and the regular absynthe nights add a touch of sophistication.

The range of ales offered is astounding, but not only that, the landlord is expanding into other offferings to tempt punters. You only have to look at the tanker of mulled wine ordered for the Chrismas rush to see evidence of that.

Well, the latest offering for summer is here, and some of the punters seem to have taken to it big style

I had to research what Prosecco was

I hope the PE is still serving a range of decent coffee, including decaff...

Yes, the PE staff are fully briefed of your requirements Jim , and have the appropriate certificates in milk frothing (including soy!), and will even grind your beans for you should you desire :-D You may recall the rather nifty little machine the landlord installed.

Any suggestions for refreshing non-alcoholic beverages always welcome. Mr Fitzpatricks do an interesting range of cordials may be worth trying out amongst the punters.

PS A prosecco bar is probably a notch down from a champagne bar and a notch up from a lambrusco bar, but still a reasonable excuse for charging people at events a fortune for a drink!

Excellent on the coffee :D Good old PE!

Seems a little incongruous that a motor vehicle should sell intoxicating drinks; as bizarre as a petrol station hosting an off-license...

That's if my assumption that Prosecco is alcoholic is correct!
