xantia handbrake cable hdi estate

Unread post by davoxx »

Sorry for posting this if it is elsewhere, I tried searching and can up with nothing.

The driver side handbrake cable has snapped, so I'll need a new one, and since they are no longer available from Citroen, I want to make sure I have the right part numbers for a 99 Xantia HDi Exclusive Estate.
I presume I should change both sides, just to be sure.

I have these parts:
4745-G6 for RH side - www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371560934986
4745-H5 for LH side - www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290996255627

Do I also need to change the rear cable? And if so, what is the part number
why?

I would do both sides, but I would also pop up the engine size as well before getting the nearside cable. As the gearboxes are of different sizes there are a few options for that cable.

Don't think you need to mess with the equaliser. i'd be inclined to say the HDI/V6 uses the longer cable, i can always check?

Yes it does...

There's a bit on replacing handbrake cables in 'Davie's Activa Clutch' blog...

On all but an Activa it's a very easy job...

There was only 2 dealers in the country had the longer one in stock a few weeks ago. I phoned my local dealer and they put me in touch with the dealers who have one

There are many companies who will make cables as a one off as well. Probably cheaper if a bunch of us get together and do a single larger order.

I bought an aftermarket one for a start which claimed to fit the activa, v6 and 2.1td which are the longer ones and it was the short one. So beware!

Quinten Hazell were the only after-market mob who did them and that was a few years ago now... Worth a try though.

What about Mister-Auto? He cares about Citroen heritage allegedly...

Do NOT buy Pagid cables! Both Pagid and Firstline list handbrake cables in their catalogue that DO NOT FIT! I learnt this the hard way and had to return them! I was in the store with the parts guy looking at his parts listing and holding the cable he provided in my hand comparing it to the original and he had to admit they were not even remotely similar in design with absolutely no way they could fit.

Please have a look at the last page or two of this thread, and in particular the very last post that is a summary:

http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... &start=225

Summary - if you have a "small engine" Xantia (all except V6 and HDI 110) then you can get both side cables from GSF, and they are the original OEM types, identical to those fitted in the factory. If you have a V6 or HDI110 which has a different left hand cable then this cable is only available from Citroen, in which case get the left cable from Citroen and the right cable from GSF.

I wasted a couple of weeks trying to find alternatives but there are no good alternatives and so many 3rd party suppliers seem to have incorrect listings for Xantia handbrake cables.

Personally I would not replace only the right hand cable because the left hand cable won't be far behind in failing and you'll probably get uneven handbrake application if the right has a nice new cable and the left has an old seized up cable, this may be picked up on in an MOT. You shouldn't need to replace the rear cable (between the splitter and the handbrake lever) as they are not exposed to water or flexing in the same way that the front cables are.

BTW 731PC0090 is the type GSF supply - probably better to buy that directly from GSF than through Ebay if you get that one.

Thanks, I'll get the right side from GSF, but Citroen Ireland does not have the left cable any more.

Uh Oh.

I wonder what the alternative is now... The standard left cable is too short for models that need the longer one - its only by a couple of inches but you can't bodge it (I tried..) and from memory the right cable is far too long to fit the left side, even as a bodge. (It fouls against the suspension chassis and exhaust if you try)

Good thing I replaced both my handbrake cables about a year and a half ago! Should see the life of the car out now as the car is now 19.... [-o<

We may well be looking at custom made cables now....

There seems to be a few specialists doting this sort of thing in the classic car world.

They may be able to shorten the too-long RH side cables..
