How did this turn into a cyclist vs other road users thread?
As we are on the subject though! When I used to cycle in London I had a pedestrian verbally abuse me regarding cyclists going through red lights. I was a bit peeved at the time as I was sitting at the red pedestrian crossing light on my bike waiting!

I am a cyclist. I've just come back from a 16 mile ride. Some people do get it into their heads that cyclists aren't worthy road users, as seems apparent on this thread.

Some cyclists are (-expletive removed-).
Some, probably more, car drivers are (-expletive removed-).
Some lorry drivers are (-expletive removed-).
Some bus drivers are (-expletive removed-).

I think that covers it in depth.

We should all chill out a bit and not rush so much when we are driving. The world would be a better, safer place.

N.B. Many of those cyclists killed were in London, crushed by lorries turning left. Not the fault of the lorry driver at all in my view.

My feeling is that all road users (barring pedestrians) should take the appropriate tests before being allowed onto the roads. When I lived in Scotland (mid seventies) I took and passed my Cycling Proficiency Test. I will assume any cyclists I encounter will have done the same until they give me reason to believe otherwise.

The cycling proficiency test hasn't been done in schools for donkeys years now, so it's a dangerous assumption to make!

There was a multiple choice section to the test and I'd completely forgotten the test was due - in fact the first I knew of it was when someone said: "Why aren't you going off with the others for the test ?" It was mainly road signs on flash cards being shown around the room by PC Acton with the usual question: "What is this sign, is it answer A, B, C, or D ?". I quickly realised that he was reading what was written on the back of the flash cards and as he showed the cards to the whole of the class, you could see what was on the back of them, and the correct answer was highlighted in red. All I had to do was work out whether it was A, B, C, or D that was in red. I think I came top the the class that year 8-[ :-** In mitigation, I'd like to point out that this all happened a very long time ago :-D I hope I won't have to hand back my cycling proficiency badge now [-o<

I cycle to and from work each day, and, like others here, try to take other road users into account at all times. If a take a certain route home, I occasionally use a section of rural pavement, which is very rarely used by pedestrians, as it avoids waiting in the centre of a busy road to turn right. If I do encounter a pedestrian, I respect their right of way, stopping if necessary to let them pass.
What does annoy me is a set of traffic lights on a complex junction which is blind to bikes. In the early morning, when no cars are travelling in the same direction, I can wait at a red light any length of time, while other routes are given the 'go' several times, without ever seeing a green light in my direction. In that case, threre's no alternative but to wait until the way is clear, and ignore the red light.
