So what would you take? I'd try something like a vauxhall monaro so I could do it sideways. Probably need a few spare tyres though!

An Audi TT 3.2RS, with the Quattro gearbox and stiffened suspension. Not the fastest car in a straight line, but (according to my cousin Bob, who has one) brilliant through the winding roads of Sussex.

Failing that, the Xantia Rally Car that ended up with 4 wheel drive, silly horsepower, and Activa suspension.

Car I most regret selling. Period.

Two seats, four wheels, three cylinders, 657cc of displacement, and a roof that comes off. What more do you need?

A Tesla S with ludicrous speed upgrade for me, I've been itching for a go in one.

Apologies Davie!

Yes, I know. Its not a "Car"......Its so off topic its beyond belief :) . I bet there are a few buses you have driven that would be "fun" on roads like this as well!

but....

One of these would be challenging, either up or down :-D , and unlike the superb Tesla there would be plenty of noise and smoke :!:

.....I recall from my schooldays the daily journey on old 60's buses up and down a 1 in 8 hill with the driver really having to "drive" the bus as it progressively lost power on the climb in spite of desperate gearchanging, and the daily miracle that it made it to the top. Coming down was the opposite, impending doom being accompanied by deafening screaming and whining of the mechanicals trying to arrest the vehicle from hurtling out of control.

Having just read this interesting piece on "How to drive a heritage bus" any sort of 60's bus with crash gearbox, and drum brakes on a road like that would be an immense physical an mental challenge both up and down :)

If I was to take a commercial vehicle it would have to be the rig a friend of mine had a few years back, started out life as a very normal Kenworth long-nose tractor unit. At some point though it had its original engine pulled out and a Detroit 12V71 crammed in. That's a two-stroke V12 diesel, in this case fitted with two six inch, straight through exhaust stacks. Between those and the supercharger suffice to say it didn't half make a nice noise...tunnels in particular were fun.

Never quite did get fully to grips with the gearboxes...had high and low range on the main box but also had a two speed axle which gave a silly possible number of ratios. Sadly they sold it in a fit of common sense a few years ago and neither of us have seen it since.

Had to take a bus? Of those I've driven, probably a 1980 Volvo B58 with a Plaxton Supreme IV body, by then things like the big Van Hool or Jonkheere bodies were becoming the norm, so with a body a couple of tonnes lighter on it the thing went like a rocket and handled really well (by bus terms anyway!).

My cousin in the US used to drive a 12V71 powered Peterbilt. I was only 9 when I saw it. I thought it sounded amazing.

This one sounds pretty good too!

Oooh, scary. That looks exactly like the Truck used in Duel... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067023/

Apparently Steven Spielberg picked that model of truck specifically because of its intimidating look whose front looks a bit like a menacing face. :-D

(Good movie BTW, if you can get hold of the new HD widescreen version)

Duel: still the only film I've seen twice - at the cinema (or "pitchers" as they were known then) when it first came out as the support feature with, I think, Asylum - a bog standard gothic schlock, horror job & then when it was re-released as the main feature in recognition of its cult status.

If Spielberg thought that old Pete was intimidating he never caught site in the rear view mirror of White Freightliner coming over the rise behind - or, rather, the front bumper - & if you looked out the back window, that's all you could see too.
