That's a fantastic advert :D I love those dearly but it would never pass muster these days for the following reasons:

Smoking in adverts is not allowed;

Rider is not wearing an approved helmet;

Weight of the trailer exceeds the recommended 85% kerb weight of the towing vehicle;

and finally,

It's illegal for passengers to travel in a caravan whilst it is on tow....

Lovely ad, Jim. All it needs is a Thelwell pony standing by the roadside!

Well, I was looking for any Thelwell images with a pony and a caravan, but had no luck, so how about these few:

And one that is, surprisingly, quite current;

After the posting of the AA boxes, I was looking for that great Thelwell cartoon of two approaching AA motorcycle patrols, who make the mistake of saluting each other . . . Anyone got it?

Looking right now, but adding a few extras;

http://cdn.c.photoshelter.com/img-get/I ... gUOh6M.jpg
An AA man keeps his gardening tools in his AA Box.

No luck with the two AA motorcycles so far.

Can't find that particular cartoon either, but I do recall the RAC and the AA being involved on different sides from the "Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins" the episode entitled "Pride". I'm sure it was very funny and well-observed but youtube has let me down.....no clip to be able to provide in evidence.

Its on now!

from Wiki
Pride
The fifth segment, "Pride", is written by Alan Simpson and Ray Galton. In it, two motorists (Carmichael and Bass) meet facing each other on a narrow country road, and neither is willing to pull aside to let the other pass. In the end, neither wins. This was a reworking of the writers' Impasse episode in the second (1963) series of Comedy Playhouse. It was remade again in 1996 as an episode of Paul Merton in Galton & Simpson's...

Cast
Ian Carmichael as Mr. Ferris
Alfie Bass as Mr. Spencer
Audrey Nicholson as Mrs. Ferris
Sheila Bernette as Mrs. Spencer
Robert Gillespie as A.A. Patrol Man
Keith Smith as R.A.C. Patrol Man
Ivor Dean as Policeman

Found it . . . Posted on the AA Box thread . . . Brockbank, not Thelwell.

Numberplate was VTU 376
I can only find out it is a black petrol motorcycle from 1950s
I think it's an add on engine on an old Raleigh bike.
I am not 100% certain that it is the same, but I predict that you might get a closer look at one in a couple of weeks time...

Spotted a very wonderfully ratty-looking Bristol 403 when I called in form petrol in the Esso garage at Nunney Catch just outside Frome. Alasdair knows it well...

I got speaking to Mike, the owner of the 403, and it's ratty by deliberate design and looks fantastic. It has apparently no paint on it but no rust either... It has the most wonderful patina all-over and on the boot lid has a massive key of the kind used to wind up toy cars years ago welded to it...

Mike is also a BX owner and was most interested in my Activa...

Comment overheard from some other customers in the shop. 'That old car out there is a disgrace. It needs a coat of paint on it for one thing...'

Here is a very much less ratty one:

This has got to be it hasn't it Jim, there can't be 2 of them surely...

..and that has a reasonable chance of being "Mike" behind the wheel :)

That's the one Neil, well found! :D Brilliant!

And yes, complete with Mike driving it! I swear he's wearing the same outfit in that picture as he was this morning...

He, just like his car, is a character....

Too fuzzy for my eyesight Davie to get the reg-no but its got to be a Cortina MkIII with a vinyl roof so its at least an XL version!

Crayford, who did a convertible for almost anything including the infamous alfresco Allegro, did their stuff on the Cortina MkIII as well.

It was K reg I think, bright orange with a vinyl roof, twin round headlights and period what looked like wolfrace slot alloys.
