That TV on the far right is uncomfortably familiar. Looks like the first TV my parents bought, only the second one in our area. All the neighbours used to come to see this marvel of technology. Only one channel IIRC BBC.

For those of you who like old pictures you might like to spend an hour in my old stomping ground, not strictly car related but you'll find plenty in the pics here:

Re: Picture(s) of the day
...and here's a pic from the first page of the link. Now I bet that "van with the windows in and full doors at the back" in colour would be a nice 2-tone, and an excellent base for a "camping car". Looks a bit berlingo/doblo esq but with a more interesting paint job and front end.

Re: Picture(s) of the day
The "covered in wheel" at the back looks like it would be something like this from 1950, the pic was taken in 1960, so that would be a 10 year old car. Not exactly the same lines though but close

That B&W street picture contains an interesting assortment of vehicles. Think I can see an original VW Beetle, and is that a Mk.10 Jag down on the right?

Re: Picture(s) of the day
I did put the registrations I could make out from the photo into autotrader vehicle check in the 1 in a million chance that someone had preserved one of those vehicles in the street!
Another useful little forensic tool on registrations. The reg of the estate ( Although it could be a DIY van conversion as it only has 2 Doors) is LVP 455.
VP is a Birmingham area code, and AVP 1 would be the first issued in 1935. After AVP 999 registrations would move onto BVP 1 and so on.
It was September 1951 when LVP 1 was issued and December 1952 when MVP 1 was issued.
So that vehicle in the picture falls between the 2 maybe round about Feb-March 1952.
I thought I had come across the tool somewhere but took a bit of finding so the link is here at oldclassiccar.co.uk
Regards Neil
PS the other obvious registration for the car on the left LOP 874 is also Birmingham and probably about March/April 1952

Re: Picture(s) of the day
There was a photo on here somewhere a few days ago of a DS 4-door cabriolet that I was talking to my supplier of car bits about who mentioned that he owned a DS as his first car.
Looked for the photo and found this
Some of you will recognise the venue .
I'm sure I have seen it in the metal and not realised it was a four door - I believe it was at Gaydon a few years ago.

Yes...i got sent a link to that on e-bay. The conversion was carried out by this mob from Italy Vernagallo Carrozzeria Torinese-www.vernagallo.itmyglaren wrote:There was a photo on here somewhere a few days ago of a DS 4-door cabriolet .........
They do all sorts....the modern day Crayford! Here's the C4 Grand Picasso given the treatment.
The home grown example is equally impressive-must have had to jump through all sorts of bureaucratic hoops to get it on the road.

Re: Picture(s) of the day
.....LVP 455....its not a Standard Vanguard estate....its definitely an Austin A40 Countryman!
...and using the little tool...it is from Suffolk (East) first registered between July 1952 and April 1953. It works! This one is recorded as SORN with the DVLA-first registered 5th October 1952.

Re: Picture(s) of the day
The A40 is a Devon van with windows added, the VP registration numbers in Brum were reserved for commercial vehicles, most private car reg nos had an O in the middle e.g. BOW

Re: Picture(s) of the day
I don't see a VW, the cars I recognise immediately are: on the right, A40 van, Ford Thames 100E van, Austin truck, Morris 1000, Bedford CA, and Jaguar Mk 9. On the left Standard Vanguard and Austin A40 Farina.white exec wrote:That B&W street picture contains an interesting assortment of vehicles. Not sure about the one on the left with two rear windows, it will need some thought.

Re: Picture(s) of the day
A do-it-yourself Countryman! Well spotted. So its definitely not an A40 Countryman....shouldn't have been so bold using a word like definitely The windows did look a bit DIY!Gibbo2286 wrote:The A40 is a Devon van with windows added, the VP registration numbers in Brum were reserved for commercial vehicles, most private car reg nos had an O in the middle e.g. BOW

Re: Picture(s) of the day
One car which did have double rear windows in the 1950's was a VW Beetle
Is it the same as the one on the left of the Pic?
