BP a few years ago switched ALL the handles/pipes to a Green plastic to "fit" with their new corporate colours, just the clip on cover showed Black/Green.
Result, as you imagine.

The recovery guy said they had done hundreds.

The way it was resulted in Diesel going into Unleaded cars so not that many serious fillings (destroyed pumps/injectors) happened. Just a lot of pumping/filters and injector cleaner.

My petrol forecourt had only two pumps, two star and four star, we never had anyone using the wrong stuff, we didn't let the idiot customers serve themselves.

Ahh, 2 and 4 star Happy memories. 5 star was still about when I started driving. I also remember those mixer pumps that would dispense a choice of 2, 3 or 4 star from the same hose...

I've not seen a filling station offering attended service for years now... Are they all extinct?

One of our local outfits also pretends to be a supermarket and so often the queues are terrible because people fill up with fuel and leave the car at the pump whilst they go and do their shopping...

I long too for the days when filling stations just sold fuel and small essentials for your cars. The one mentioned above doesn't even sell things like bulbs any more... The nearest thing to car bits they may do is air fresheners

I rarely go there, I choose the garage down the road that sells the more traditional fare of fags, porno mags, booze, awful coffee and unhealthy snacks! never a big queue there but the hand car wash on the same forecourt is always packed out...

I still buy a weekly gerry can full of petrol for the equipment at work at a lovely timewarp garage tucked off the A272 at Trotton where they insist on serving you. The place hasn't changed in decades I get my C5 MOT'd there as they're the only garage I trust not to try and con me

We also have one that's recently turned into a BP M&S. It's now a shopping hell in much the same way as you describe Gibbo. I avoid it at all costs!

Actually to be fair to my dad, where we are all the pumps are attended, apart from the motorway services where you have to pay first and then fill up yourself. Hate those ones. How am I supposed to know how many litres she wants?!? The best restaurant in town is often at the petrol station. But the little shop is normally useless.

I visit dad in the Canaries sometimes.. a local garage is quite something!! A very good café/restaurant with a motor museum! only 6 or so vehicles, but perfect original concours winners! to my eye
