What oil ? 2.0 hdi

Hi recently purchased a xsara Picasso hdi 2.0 very very cheap but no service history
Just got the service kit and have been warned about putting 5w 40 oil in as could kill a high mileage hdi
This has got me worried now as I need this car to last a few months any advice greatly appreciated

I always used 10W-40 diesel oil in the HDi Xantia I once owned. In fact I use exactly the same stuff in all except the C1 and it's always been fine...

My Activa seems to thrive on it...

Yup, 10W40. I ran a Xantia HDi on that for about 150K miles without nay issue. Actually, any decent 10W40 will do, they are all C rated for diesels and will be well in excess of what was available when the cars were new. The latest is CF but CD or CE will also be ok.
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(

Asda were doing their own brand of 10W40 fully synthetic oil at £14 for 5l. I have used it on my previous 2.0l HDi Xantias, and now in my C5 2.0l HDi estate.
