One of the desirable accessories from my early experience of motoring was this

No not the 2-tone Chevrolet Bel-Air attached to it but the "Tiger in the Tank".

Ahh :D Had those too.. An Esso 'Tiger in your Tank...'

Their old strap line 'Put a Tiger in your Tank!'

We as kids used to hang them on our bikes...

I had one until not that long ago before it fell to bits through old age...

They gave them away after you'd filled up a certain amount of petrol as I remember... When dad used to go and buy a pound's worth of petrol every couple of weeks or more - about four gallons then!

Like me now, he rarely used the car and went where needed by foot, bike or moped...Maybe why he's still going strong at 92!!!

That conjurers an image in my mind Steve

Actually, if it was a PA Cresta they looked absolutely sensational in pink 8-)
Seeing as the Cresta PA memories have been flooding into the thread...I have unearthed a fascinating series of original brochures herecovering virtually everything about the Cresta/Velox. Interesting bit on the Auto box....or like "greased Lightning" the "Hydromatic". Also this thing known as the Vauxhall Friary Estate Car

Yes, more than likely a vibrator unless it used a set of special valves especially designed for running at 12v... Some of this era also were hybrid designs with transistors in the audio stages and valves in the RF, mixer and IF stages. Again, those valves were often the special 12v versions.

Some very late valve/hybrid car radios used an early transistorised inverter to generate the required HT...

One of my other pastimes is vintage wireless

Vintage wireless, Jim . . . Do you know the Chalkpits Industrial Museum, at Amberley (near Bury Hill/Arundel)?

That's very true!!!

I've heard of the Chalkpits but not yet visited... I'll love it because in addition to vintage wireless I love vintage industrial stuff of all kinds...

I must plan a visit very soon... Thanks for that :D

I had a Velox like that blue one the first time round in the .50s, only a soloon. We used to get leopard skin pattern blankets and cover the seats with them to look like leopard skin seat covers - all the rage then.

They cater for car meets and rallies there. Plan to go when there's a gathering of some old and interesting vehicles and you get even more to look at ☺ You'll definitely need a full day there.
It's on one of my motorbike routes when I fancy a blast so I go past quite regularly.

CitroJim, if you are ever up in the Dudley area, and you have a lot of time to spare, call in to The Black Country Living Museum. I have been there once, and I should go back again. They even have a couple of prefab iron houses!
