DRL control box....wire up problem

Unread post by Stickyfinger »

I have got the following controller box

Image

I have the DRL led's connected to their feed wires as shown
I have a pick up from the Side lights live feed side to the bulbs, direct to the yellow wires

Now the problem I am getting is I get LIVE on the Black (Earth) wire when I turn on the sidelights before I connect them to the battery (temp to test before attaching an ignition on feed to red).

If I switch the wires on the LED's they do not light up which I expect (led's being polarity sensitive? )

knackered control box ?

Do you mean that, with the black wire disconnected, you measure +ve voltage between it and the chassis? If so, that's to be expected. Until it's properly connected, the controller is 'floating' above earth, and will reflect the voltage fed in via the sidelight wires.
Imagine a simple bulb, connected between supply and earth. If you lift the earth connection, you will measure the supply voltage on the 'earthy' side of the bulb.

Thanks

Just checked, I have (with side lights on and drls connected....... Live on the red (not connected) and live on the black (as you say)

Edit:

Connected up Red/Back/Yellows/DRL's as per.

DRL's do not come on with ignition
DRL's come on with SideLights, off when sides turned off
DRL's stay on with Dip
DRL's stay on with Main

***k.....this should be simple...........am I being thick ? but where is the "Ignition On" switch/fire line ...I wonder how it detects starting ?

I found a similar one here: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/car-Led- ... 4.9.PcAKm1

By the looks of it, the yellow wires should be connected to the indicators not the sidelights. Switch on looks to be an internal function on voltage. It should go off when the headlights are switched on. What happens if you start the engine?

That looks like the same thing.....

Nothing.....they only come on when the side lights turn on.

How can it detect any voltage when you start the car, there are zero connections to a "start live" connection ? (instructions say connect to battery, red+ black- and both wires fitted with rings)

I will try an ignition on feed to Red+ and try that in combination with battery- connection

I presume it's got an internal function that only switches on when the voltage is above 14V or so - ie the alternator is charging. What happens if you disconnect from the side lights (which I don't think it's supposed to be connected to anyway!)

Will try that in a bit....

They are supposed to dim 50% when side lights come on, but are at 100%......

Tesco sells replacements!

Get an LED one ;)

They are available for fridges - at a price...

I thought mine had gone once and then found it automatically turns itself off if the door is left open too long...

That'll do then..

Garages store jamjars without needing a fridge... Especially in London!

Just browsing and seen this little nugget! - I have to ask why didn't you just activate your Factory fitted DRLs?, or did you just want a pair of Carlos Fandango BMW Angel Eye looky likeys? :-D

The answer is in the Avatar!

A DRL controller is somewhat easy, n'est pas:
"DRLs on if engine running (IGN on), and sidelights off."
All achievable with one SPCO relay.

Simples.
