Tartan Travel Rugs and other Nostalgic Motoring Accessories

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

If you were a BMC customer in the 1960's you apparently had a bewildering choice of BMC approved "Travel Rugs" and Seat Covers. No not all tartans were catered for but these were:-

Ancient Cameron of Erracht
Anderson
Black Watch
Buchanan
Davidson of Tulloch
Lindsay
Macbeth
Macgregor
Macqueen
Royal Stewart
Dress Stewart
Wallace

Marvellous!

Us too. Think it's what those of us a certain age do.
Have ditched the gas-mask, though.

Likewise.
Must own up to some spare coolant, too - although never needed it at all on our recent 5000km to Scotland and back.
Old cars and all that. Twenty this summer :P

I carry nothing apart from my warm coat, Green Flag membership and a credit card. If I'm on a longish journey, a bottle of water (to drink), a banana and some chocolate.

In the boot I have a warning triangle, 4 hi-viz vests and a spare bulb kit.

I don't have an LHM car now, but when I did I gave up carrying spare LHM as it became apparent that in most cases of a leak (in my experience anyway) it'd p**s a litre out quicker than you could pour one in!

The tartan rugs were £2 19s 6d. In 1965. In 1966 you could have have had 6 World Cup final standing tickets for the price of a BMC approved tartan rug plus another tanner!

The crap I ferry around in my car is somewhat fluid but the only overlap with your list is the telescopic wheelbrace and socket set.
Never any LDS, oil or water.
Tempting fate I know but have never needed any.
I did buy a litre of LDS at Wetherby one year, ages ago now, and dumped it in the reservoir.
That was in the previous car though.

Really should get a new jack though - the one that came with the car is a Toyota one and somewhat mangled - came like that!

I carry a small emergency toolkit in the Activa that will do most jobs. It packs into a briefcase-type case and has rescued a few cars now but never my own!!!

When I got my C5 the jack was buckled and useless. First trip to the scrappy found (amongst other things) a nice looking jack for a C5, £10.

Like Jim, I carry a small plastic 'briefcase' in the boot, containing multimeter, few spare fuses, a length of connecting wire, few small handtools, small torx/driver set, roll of gaffer and self-amal tape, few cable ties and hose clips, and a couple of H1's etc.

Also in the boot is a telescopic wheel brace, and a torque wrench (never trust tyre depots), and a 12v tyre pump. For international/major treks, also throw in a recently purchased small low-profile trolley jack - not a lot of fun with the scissor variety. Piece of carpet covers the boot floor, and doubles as kneeling mat. Fortunately, XM boots are v-a-s-t.

Traffic laws here require carrying of two warning triangles, a fluorescent bib for each occupant (for motorway breakdowns), and a spare pair of prescription specs (if you wear for driving).

Almost never need any of it - but Sod's Law still operates. Main use has been on other folks' cars!
