Hi
There are 2 bulbs in the clock assy you can change & they are easy when you know how.
Also Peugeot say the clock assy is a sealed unit ( Yeah right! )
HINT: Throw the Haynes book of lies in the bin & then ask someone who has really changed these bulbs, There is NO need whatsoever to remove half the center consoul or radio to get at the clock!

Hi
Yes, Ive done the clock bulbs on a few 405s before, Great way to earn beer tokens, lol
You will need a small flat blade screw driver, A torx 20 & torx 15 bit or screwdriver, a cloth & the 2 new bulbs.
The facia panel marks very easy, Please use the cloth to avoid marking your facia.
Pop the triangle plastic trim off the top of the consoul to get at the top torx 20 screw, Remove the screw.
Use the small flat blade screwdriver for this, Put the cloth agaisnt the consoul & behind the screwdriver so you dont mark the plastic.
Remove the 3 switches from the consoul, They have colour coded plugs so you cant mix them up, There is a small tab on each plug that has to be pressed in to disconnect it from the switch.
Use the flat blade screwdrver again, Put the blade of the screwdriver down the right hand edge of the hazard warning switch & lever agaist the left hand edge of the heated rear window switch & not the consoul.
Once the first switch is out you can get a finger in to pop the other 2 out.
There is another torx 20 screw behind the hazard light switch, Remove the screw.
Ok, Now hold the radio flap in the half open position, Look in the gap between the flap & the consoul & you will see 2 more torx 20 screws, Remove both these screws.
The heater control panel assy is a sepearate part of the dash, Dont worry about it, The bit you want to remove will easily lift clear in a second.
Gently tilt the bottom part of the consoul & start to lift it away from the facia a couple of inches only! Wiggle the radio flap out the way if needs be.
Ok, Now there is a small brown plug at the top for the alarm LED that needs disconnecting, Try not to lose the metal clip.
There will be a bigger brown plug just pushed into the plastic under the left hand side heater vent, Just pull it off the consoul.
There is a small white plug that also needs disconnecting from the back of the clock.
Once you have done all that, the consoul assy will lift clear.
Ok, Now undo the 2 torx 15 screws that hold the clock to the consoul.
The clock plastic housing is in 2 halfs, Gently release the clips & pull the back off the clock assy.
Twist & lift the 2 bulbs + holders out from the clock & throw in the nearest bin.
Replace the 2 bulbs, Gently line the metal pins up with the holes, Dont bend them! & push the clock assy back together.
Reattach the clock to the consoul with the 2 screws.
If you HAVE aircon, Blow the dust out the cabin temperature sensor & spray the fan with a small amount of WD40, Very easy to do when the consouls not in the way.
Plug the brown alarm LED plug back together & reattach the metal clip to the facia.
There is a clip in the top left corner of the consoul that pushes into the little plastic slot, Line this up first when putting it all back together.
Try not to trap the wires between the consoul & the heater vents.
Remember to push that spare brown plug into its slot & plug the white connector back in to the clock & click it home.
Replace & reconnect the heated rear window & rear fog lamps switch before refitting the consoul, Feed the hazard warning lights connector plug through the hole because you need to get at the screw before you can refit this switch.
Make sure no wires are trapped & that everything works before replacing the screws.
When you first turn the ignition on, All the clock segments will light up, Just press both clock buttons to reset the clock to normal & then set the time.
I know it looks a real big task in words, It isnt, Its a simple job that the Haynes book of lies makes harder by telling you to remove things you dont need to.

No problem mate, Once you have done it, You will enjoy burning the Haynes book of lies! lol
Its a real easy job to do with the right know how.
Dont get the bulbs from Halfrauds either, They cost a fortune in there, Either a local motor factor or even a Pug dealer will be cheaper.
You want 2, The bulbs & black plastic holders are one sealed unit.
If you want to be really flash & Peugeot hasnt changed the part number you want 2 x part number 6112 34 for the bulbs.
It could be worse, The 405 from august 94 onwards has a moddified wiring loom, The Haynes book of lies never mentions that either! lol

Does it get its feed from the alternator ? do the gauges play up ? mine works occasionally
quote:

Hi
Yours is a diesel, Im not to clued up on Diesel rev counters, Some work of a terminal on the alternator while others have a flywheel sensor.
According to the Pug cd rom I have it should have a flywheel sensor, You could always ask in the Pug parts dept.
Look for a brown plug & socket with 3 terminals on the top of the
gearbox near where the join is between engine & gearbox.
It will have gold terminals when you unplug it.
If you do find one, The terminals might just want a clean & a gently adjustment with a very small flat blade screwdriver.
The 405 electrics weak points are the earthing points on the body shell & the rubbish connectors they used.
The battery connections are a classic piece of rubbish design & wait till you see those 3 large round loom connectors behind the passenger side headlamp!

Hi
The temp sensor is located in the passenger side door mirror
Look under the mirror housing for a small black button sticking out a bit, thats the sensor, It might have got water in it or a dodgy connection where it plugs on to the door.
Theres a 2 pin connector plug thats for the sensor, I thing its White, But dont quote me on it, Havent had one off for a couple of years, lol
The Electric mirror plug should be Brown if I remember correctly.
Torx 20 screws to take the mirror off, Just open the window first & get you finger behind the black plastic inside trim to pop it off.
The torx screws are under the grey sticky rubber.
Get a helper to hold the mirror while you take the screws out, They are pretty heavy!
Also dont lose the gasket behind the outside plastic trim if you do remove it from the door with the mirror.
When you screw the mirror back on, A slight dab of a threadlocking compound is a good idea, & tighten them up fairly tight too, The screws do vibrate lose if you dont.

I've just replaced the Outside Air Temp sensor on my 405.. £18 from peugeot (touch expensive I thought!) But it did fix the same problem as you have. The diesel rev-counter is a common problem, but I have always found that removing the flywheel sensor and cleaning it (it looks/works a bit like an ABS wheel sensor) fixes the problem for about another 50k miles.

Lee ,
Do you know the common faults with 405 93 td cooling fans mine wont cut in . There are 3 relays in front of fans have you known them to play up[?]
quote:

Hi
That outside temp sensor is located in the passenger side door mirror, See my previous post on that one.
Now to the fans
Its normally a dirty electrical connection that causes the fans to stop working.
Ok, Inside the fusebox to the right of the drivers knee behind the little door that just pulls off remove fuse no 2 a 5 amp & turn the ignition on, Do the fans cut in at slow speed now?
If you have aircon, Switch it on with the ignition, Do the fans cut in?
Check the fuses under the bonnet in the small black fuse box near the power steering fluid bottle.
Hidden behind the passenger side headlamp is the fans / aircon control box or to give it its correct name BITRON box, Sometimes these go wrong.
Sometimes the fan motors fail.
Do the easy fuse checks first, Then you need to unplug the 3 fan relays behind the front grill & check the terminals are clean & bright & the same for the plugs too.
To get the grill off, 1 x 10mm bolt in each top corner, 1 x cross head screw in each bottom corner between the slats & unclip ( If its still there ) The black plastic clip that holds the plastic bonnet release pull handle to the grill.
Lift the grill off, While its off, hoover all the dead leaves out from behind the fans.
CAUTION! The fans CAN run without the key even being in the ignition!
( When you have fixed them! )
Check out this link, Its really helpful & explains the BITRON & fans in great detail.
Click on "ELECTRICAL" at the top & then on "306 Cooling fans, Basic pricipals of operation" in the list on the left.
I know it says 306, But they are the same as the 405 & most other PSA cars
