Terrified by what might happen

Post by Xantic »

Tomorrow, Friday the 26th of February in the year 2016 i am about to embark on a terrifying journey.

From Cardiff to Somerset by train.(gulp)
Now i have heard the horror stories of what happens on train journeys so to be safe i have packed.

Garden blower in case of leaves on the line.
Foldable shovel, in case of snow.
Tent, sleeping bag and some dried rations
Compass, torch and a bit of string. Sounds good the string don't it.
Passport, in case i get kidnapped by aliens and they drop me off in another country.
Good warm coat, scarf and gloves
And a tube of smarties. :o

Wish me luck.

I never travel by train, I really wish I could! its so pricey if you drive a car or two! I wonder what life would be like if you removed the cost of all of the oil filters and cambelts and synthetics and 64bit lexias and doubled that cost again by the time spent, and just 'got about' and could have a wine/ale/beer whilst looking out of the window to the side on a carriage behind a flighty Scotsman or a train across Australia (My last train I think ;) )

however, in the UK and especially in the South East, 'not for me clive'

Maccoys ! or some fancy kettle type crisps, salt and vinegar ideally ...

Last time I travelled by train would be 1968, from Felixstow supposedly to Whitby but ended up in Darlington at 02:00, had to take a taxi to a former workmate in Thornaby - no telephone so just turned up on the doorstep.
Very surreal - someone in the opposite tower block threw a gas cooker off the balcony at about 4am.
Swedish girlfriend with me was not impressed.

Wet wipes won't save you, a bio suit and a full radiation decontamination at your destination barely cuts it in some places.
Nice to know I'm not the only public transporafobe, I've not stood in a bus for over 15 years, I've been in a train 4 times, 3 times on heritage lines (good fun) and once on at the age of about 6 with my mum from Eastleigh (not fun).

You say what would it be like to be conveyed to your destination, to be able to take a drink or 3 without a care, to not have pay to run a car? Who knows, but occasionally being taken some of the way to your destination, eventually, is a heavy price to pay for an unhindered life of alcaholism, and considering you will be mugged on your journey either by the owners or users of said transportation i TS a price I cannot afford.

Crikey, they make it difficult to book a train ticket, and do they have sat navs because it's taking me to Westbury. You would think they know the way by now.

Oh well all booked, I am having a whisky and coke right now to calm the nerves. Alas, no Swedish girlfriend to accompany me, I did get a funny question from a local nutcase yesterday in a shop. "Excuse me sir, what paint brush would i need to paint a bannister"

Buy one of each i replied they are only 30p each. Of course the Mrs abandoned me when she heard the question and said afterwards. Your not the best person to ask considering your allergic to painting.

I used to travel to school by train in the '50s, Petts Wood to Chelsfield 4d return. When I left school I worked in London for a year, this cost me about 2/- a day out of a wage of £3 per week - I don't think I've been on a real train since. The one at Trago Mills is very good though. 8-)

My experience (limited) in recent times has been very good, never more than a couple of minutes late, clean and comfortable.

I've hopped on the train at my local, unmanned, station and travelled to Wigan to collect a car, to Leeds for another, and used to regularly go to Westbury car auctions to pick up cars I'd bought there, my most recent trips have been from Lydney to Cardiff return for Christmas shopping.
The biggest problem I have is getting the three miles from home to the station, no bus service to match the train times so it's either get a lift from a pal or get a taxi, the taxi fare for that three miles is as much as the train fare to Cardiff.

This train won't pass an mot. No seatbelts. No indicators and it smells like a gorillas armpit. All this after having a lift in a fiesta with square wheels. Bumpy the fiestas are.
