The car first wouldn't start when it got very damp after not being used for a while, I dried it all out by leaving all the doors open on a nice bright day, reset the BSI and it started fine, since then its been left standing again and nothing will make it go.
I have dried out all the connectors under the drivers carpet and removed the BSI ECU which did have signs of corrosion on a couple of the connectors, not serious just on the surface. I took the cover off but there were no signs of wet or corrosion inside, I can't get the boards out so can't check underneath but there is nothing I can see through the holes,. I cleaned all the connectors but it is still showing the immobiliser key on the display and won't start.
It seems to be recognising the key OK because if you leave it in and open the door it bleeps at you, remove the key and it stops.
Could the fault be in the connectors that got wet? They appear OK but am wondering if internal leakage would cause the problem. I soaked them with WD40 then dried them off with an air line.
Everything else controlled by the BSI works fine - it just wont start.
Thanks in anticipation.
Peter

Re: More BSI trouble
If you can, get proper Electronic Contact Cleaner onto the job. WD40 will move water, but not properly clean contacts. A decent toothbrush can also help.

Re: More BSI trouble
Yes I know, must have used gallons of Electrolube and Radiospares switch cleaner over the years but strangely enough I have found that WD40 works better on volume controls and other pots, certainly lasts longer. I used WD40 in the hope of getting any residual moisture out. A toothbrush is a good idea, I hadn't thought of that. I put it all back together today - ever hopeful but it didn't work, even tried starting it with easy start, it fired up on it but wouldn't run of course.
I will have another go at cleaning the plugs but I'm running out of options now. Only did the cam belt a little while ago and fitted a new aux belt and tensioner. The only upside is that my new one needs an aux belt.

Re: More BSI trouble
Have you got a Lexia / Diagbox Peter ?
If so any faults / codes present ?
I'd expect it to have thrown a code or something if it won't start, even if its something about it "forgetting" the keys (I hope not)

Re: More BSI trouble
I have, in the past, used a cheap electric toothbrush to clean things with, and they can work well. Poundland sometimes sell them, and I used one on some brass-work (with deep grooves in it) that had not been cleaned for some time, and it came up nicely.

Re: More BSI trouble
You need to Lexia it Peter. It may just have 'forgotten' the key and needs to be re-introduced (for which you need the 4 digit code of course....!), or it may be that the aerial is not working properly and the signal is scrambled - although it appears to know the key is there, as the key in warning works.

Re: More BSI trouble
Thanks for your comments. I do have a Lexia but it hasn't worked for a long time, someone has it and was trying to fix it up for me, it wouldn't talk to the laptop, I was going to take him another one but never got round to it. Of course I can't take the car to anyone. I checked again today and it definitely knows when the key is in the ignition, I don't know if that is all that's necessary or whether it needs more info from it. I will try and rescue my Lexia.

Re: More BSI trouble
hi Peter I would drop down to Dorset and lexiarise it but I am a bit busy..
if all else fails Easter is looking promising for Wareham ..
you need your kit back, and then for it to work....if possible..
I did my installation by accident I think, so I would struggle a bit to sort yours, but someone else who on here may be able to get it going ok, if you courier it to them

Re: More BSI trouble
I am trying to get it back but the chap has moved since I gave it to him and I haven't been able to find him so far, although I must admit I haven't tried very hard, no reply from his email so will have to get on to it. Thanks for the offer anyway.
I had it working once, can't remember why it stopped but he thinks the computer is the problem, I was going to take him another newer one before he moved but until now I have been able to sort all my problems without it.

Re: More BSI trouble
Oh that's a shame
I'm not sure I'd want to lend mine out (but I have done in the past but only to a highly trusted neighbour)
Its a shame I'm so far away, you're welcome to use mine.
, who is nearest to you with one you could use maybe ???

That's very kind Alasdair. If I can't get anything fixed up in the near future I will take you up on that, I would bring it up but its a long way to push it.
