HDI Fuel filter housings.

Post by lexi »

These plastic housings. Never had bother with them. Thought I would change my filter as no record of it, and I now have a leak.
Mine is the Siemens housing with Bosch IP. I have VDO in tank lift pump and the Mahle filter that has a perfectly round gasket. I renewed the drain plug and washer, plus filter and new gasket, removing the old one.
Do these units crack? Mine has not been butchered by hammering and I used a strap wrench to undo and tighten it. If I put my right hand under the filter and my thumb is on the white drain plug, my pinky has the fuel on it. I will take the whole unit off and examine it tomorrow. Just wondered if there was a place that they cracked specifically. They only seem to leak because of old drain plug or twisted top ring. Other than that, I have only seen units changed because of failed lift pumps and swarf contamination. I have 3 pipes on top and a multi-plug for electric. Electric what? There is no water sensor fitted. I presume because it is low spec LX?

I think there's an oring on the drain on the bottom that cracks and causes a leak. Mine was leaking here, but I just fitted a new housing as it was also vibrating like a good un!

Yes, I renewed that Richard. If housing is cracked, it will be getting the plastic welder on it . I have other housings from Patrols and Landrovers with filters to match. It is those 3 pipes and fittings that are an issue. Hopefully I have twisted the top gasket or something and it goes back together better. I ran it and tested it ok. Then a longer run and dripped again. All tight as I dare. Tomorrows task.

Took it off and put on bench. The only thing I can see that may give problems on these housings, is the top plastic screw lid.
That could get cross threaded, butchered or lose it's shape over time. That would stop a good seal onto the rubber gasket. Important to hold the section with the pipe spigots on it, where it will correctly match with the hoses.........then screw the serrated ring itself , keeping the other section still.
I have put it back together. My new seal had been sitting ok. It isn't leaking now after an hours use, so will see how it goes.
As an aside, I did notice just a few metal particles in the bottom of filter bowl. Keeping the diesel in the housing shows them up as they glitter silver.
Don't know if that means the lift pump needs renewed now, or later. The filter would deal with them ATM. Borrowed time probably at 115k miles.

I believe that the standard advise on seeing brass swarf in the filter housing is replace the lift pump ASAP. If any gets past the filter and into the high pressure pump it gets expensive.

James: The swarf was about 3 or 4 specs and it looked silver? Looking for a deal on a pump now.

I have not experienced this myself. I am just going on what I have read on this forum.
