Funny how you only get half the story....! I'm with Lexi, the timing belt has jumped due to the belt / rag. If you're lucky you can re-set it and no damage done, otherwise you might have bent a valve or two. Stick a new belt on it and see what happens.

Question is, in the UK how do you make this mistake as the diesel pump spout won't physically fit a modern petrol engined fuel filler orifice?

Sorry guys I didn't think anything of the tangle & belt snapping until I was writing my post as the belt didn't exactly snap,everything carried on moving but the belt didn't so the belt was more melted through than snapped,would this still cause the timing belt to slip? Maybe the diesel filler was slightly oversized but I didn't have to fight with it to get it in the tank hence the mistake on my behalf.with the amount of work I've done on my c5 it's grown on me a great deal since the purchase 12 months ago I just don't want to end up getting rid due to damage caused by whatever the problem is

Makes me wonder now if the diesel pump had a petrol nozzle on it by mistake...

Not sure but the bloke in front was messing about after he fueled up,sat there a couple of mins then drove off so I wonder if he did the same thing?.my plan is tochols my timing belt,brim the tank(with unleaded) at the first available opportunity & put in some injector cleaner also maybe try replacement plugs

It's obviously not happy and will likely be a combination of sensor readings from the fuel issue.

It's definitely not a happy c5 at the minute!I was worried it may be an internal temperature issue as it only does it when I've been driving & have given it a bit of throttle

If the timing is indeed out the ECU could be flagging errors on all sorts of things. Find someone local with a lexia and get the codes read, that could point you in the right direction.

My c5's still running like a bag of spanners but looks like I'm getting closer to solving the problem,I tried flushing the diesel through with petrol & redex system cleaner,cleaned up the plugs eventually changing them,did a compression test which showed the car has great compression but the car ran no better,today put the car through a diagnostic code reader & got 5 codes 2 exhaust sensors,2 multiple misfires & ignition coil malfunction so checked the coil pack & found a weak spark & no spark on 2 plugs,took my plugs out which I changed 2 days ago,you could see carbon on 3 plugs but the 4th was like brand new so obviously not burning fuel,new coil pack on its way hopefully that will fix it

Excellent So it looks like the coil failure was coincidental... Hopefully the other faults will clear with a new coil but be aware one or more of your oxygen (lambda) sensors may have been damaged, both as a result of the misfire and the mis-fuel..
