Otterchops non start. C5 Hdi 110' 52 plate

Post by Xantianut »

Ay up!

Otterchops nearly felt the underside of my BIG hammer today.

This is my diagnosis,

Engine churns at normal speed but no start. Glow plug relay and warning light all operating with audible click under bonnet, as per spec. Pump in tank clicks but does not gurgle, Battery seems OK, gauge measuring half a tank of electricity but gave it a swift charge anyway, just in case. No difference but the needle showed the top up.

All electrical connections checked and seem clean and reasonably tight, All oil seals in place on the connectors so no worries there.

Am I right in thinking it's a fried tank pump? Still have not got Lexia working so can't pass on those details.

I have had an intermittent non-start for a while now but never a total refusal before. She normally starts on the button, just like a diesel should. Any ideas? Am I on the right track or barking up the wrong tree?

Re the fuel pump - lifting up the rear bench seat and opening the cover of the pump housing will allow you to easily hear it working or not with ignition on.

It isn't. As I said, it clicks but does not gurgle. Rear seat lifted, circ plug removed.....

I wonder if Otterchops has had a load of microbes partying in the diesel, and then curled up in the in-tank pickup, died, and blocked it. That has been known to happen (I have seen photos of this).

If you've tried giving the pump a knock and that hasn't done anything, then I'm guessing the pump has had it. The fact that you're getting a 'click' would indicate there is communication to the pump - it's just not working. Let us know if you need a part number.

I wouldn't say it should gurgle, more of a hum or whine

Try giving it an encouraging tap with the handle of a large screwdriver. Note that you have to do this within about 5 - 10 seconds of turning the ignition on as the power is cut to the pump after that time if the engine isn't running.

Good point - but I would of thought you would hear some sort of humming / gurgling - if it's just clicking then it sounds as though it's knackered.

I had my tank out an the old Xantia when they changed over the pumps and I shoved petrol in the HDi! My mechs had the thing out drained and flushed it and blew it out with compressed air, but the pump soon failed necessitating a replacement shortly after. Not sure how much you can do from the fuel pump hatch and whether you would want to disturb whatever is in there if you're not going to take it off!

MyGlaren, that is what I normally do.

Ah well, tomorrow the pump comes out for cleaning and hammering. See what happens. Failing that, new tank unit. Then, if that does not work.......

You can get Biocide treatment in a bottle from yacht chandlers. I think maybe a new pump at 100 quid could be your worst case scenario?

Before messing with the pump, check that it is getting 12V at key on for about 3-5 seconds - if possible with the pump connected so that it is under load. C5s suffer with burning of the pin that feeds the pump on the underbonnet fuse box that causes a non-start situation.

Ay up!

It is getting 12V but nothing happens. Took the pump out today, tested it with a 12V supply, alles geficht. It is a Bosch pump so to the Bay of Evil where a replacement has been secured for a mere £48, genuine Bosch!

Just wait now until Tuesday for delivery! I will just have removed the smell of diesel fuel from my person by Tuesday........

Gas masks at the ready!!!! I would also be grateful if no one lights any naked flames in my vicinity, I am too young to die in a blaze of glory. :teabag:
