NON STARTING XANTIA HDI, LIFT PUMP?

Post by HDI »

Just got into the Xantia to go home (40 miles away) and it won't start. It turns over fine but I can't hear the lift pump, so I guess it's that! I've read of people giving the pump a thump under the rear seat but I can't find anything under the seat to thump! Help??!!

Ok, I've thumped the underside of the tank and the pump decided to cooperate and it's started, this time! Where is the pump and what is involved in replacing it please?

Lift up the passenger seat behind the driver, then lift up the carpet. You'll see a plastic grommet about 6" in diameter. Remove carefully using a screwdriver or finger nails if they are strong :-)

Now you'll see the top of the pump with 4 wires going into a connector. The 2 thick wires are for the pump, it draws about 4A, the other 2 wires are for the fuel gauge.

The pump is secured in the tank by a large ring nut (6" dia.). This can be removed with care by using a screwdriver and small hammer. The pump then lifts out easily. Tip, wait until the tank is almost empty otherwise diesel will get sloshed around all over the place !

It is possible to replace just the pump for about £45, see eBay ads. If you want to replace the whole unit it will be more expensive.

Another tip. Before screwing the large pump retaining ring back in place thoroughly clean both threads and then lightly grease, it makes a big difference.

Start to finish, about 15 minutes :-D Happy spannering.

PS Just had a thought.... the above only relevant if you have Bosch injection system. If it's Siemens there is no lift pump in the tank .

Thanks. I'm guessing it must be Bosch as thumping the tank bought it back to life, so there must be a pump in there. Found a Bosch pump on ebay for £30, so I guess I'll be wreaking of diesel some time soon! I did notice the pump seemed to be noisier than usual, I should have taken action as soon as I noticed that!

One more thing you MUST do is check the fuel filter housing under the bonnet for any signs of fine brass swarf. If any of that gets into the high pressure injection pump the result will be wallet damage !! :(

Some on the forum advocate changing the filter housing and filter following a lift pump replacement.

From what I have read on the forum it is a good idea to wait until the tank is half full (or less) before swapping the pump. Tie some string onto the wires before you unplug things, as the wires have been known to try and hide (hilarious!) from you. I would also check the in-tank pickup, as it will probably have a load of brown gunk on it (result of microbes that live in diesel), and if it has any, clean it up.

Roger that! I won't enjoy the job, I hate the smell of diesel!
It's piling up the jobs, thats for sure! On the list so far are, front lower arm's, rear brake pads, oil & filter change, pollen filter, change front and rear seats!

Pump arrived this morning and I'm surprised, it's a big 'ol lump! I've fitted upgraded pumps to high performance turbo cars pushing 400 bhp which are smaller than this!
Quick question to save me a potential problem when fitting it later, are the connections on the OEM Citroen pump screw terminals like this replacement, or push on spade type?
