A few years ago, a chap I used to work with had a beloved Cambridge. He used to take it to work each day, it was kept clean and in good order, he used it to take his family on holiday in it. Eventually he, and it, got a bit older so he decided to buy something a little newer. He advertised the Cambridge in the local paper and sure enough someone came 'round to buy it. "I've got a box of spares in the shed for it if you hang on a minute" my mate said........ "Nah, don't need them" came the reply "I'm taking it banger racing" #-o
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

I would have thought the Zodiac would have beaten the Cambridge hands down, 2.6 litres against 1.6! The Oxford/ Cambridge cars were nice but by no means fast. I had a cambridge diesel, 40 bhp even slower. I think the BMC 1500 diesel had the rare distinction of the starter producing more torque than the engine. :-D

Banger racing was about what could be damaged, the King Pin uprights and their supports protected the cars "go bits", the engine was low and the rad inside the suspension extensions so was less likely to be damaged, same at the rear with the tall wings over the rear axle/long deep boot.

Yes, I had forgotten about that, there was a huge space between the radiator and front grill, unlike the previous model which had the rad pressed against the grill, it did have a lot of room inside though. That was the one they use as Taxis in India, Mk 4 I think.

Two very EASY mods were the rover V8 or the C type 3ltr.....loads of room

Always remember when i lived in Ottery St Mary, we had floods, I attached a hose pipe to the exhaust tied to the boot handle, removed the carpets (most of them) and drove about with water above the sills, it filled up inside a couple of times :)

Love that...

Used to enjoy banger racing in the 70s but now hate it with a passion... Anything that inflicts wilful damage and destruction just doesn't work for me

I didn't have to go banger racing - I've been driving them most of my life. :(

Me too, never bought a new car, always used the part exchange dog that was taking a long time to sell.
