Please don't tell me the "Mr Average Joe" either likes or knows about that. How come Ford and Audi have "lived" on it and Citroen not ?

Well the DS3 is selling pretty well - I see them all over the place. And that is/was being used in the WRC AFAIK. (Haven't kept in touch with the WRC in the last few years but watched it religiously before that)

Citroen never made a road-going "customer" version of any of their rally cars, that is why they failed to capitalise on it. We got the "C4 by Loeb", which is a pretty poor effort really, being a "basic" version of the standard VTS - without such niceties as the CD changer and Xenon lights!.. Imagine if they'd made a 300bhp 4wd tarmac-melting version instead, or of the DS3.

Ford made the Escort RS, then the Sierra 4x4 Cosworth, then the Escort 4x4 Cosworth, all of which were proper rip-snorting cars
Audi made the Quattro Coupe, of course, in 10v and 20v turbo forms.
Peugeot made the 205GTi successful off the back of it's mental Group B car
Lancia - we all remember the Integrale rally car and the Delta Integrale production car.
Mitsubishi? Evo anyone? They don't even compete any more and people still buy the thing..
Subaru - they've made boring Japanese saloons for years, and sold so so many Imprezas based on only 3 WRC drivers and 3 Constructors titles..
Even the Metro 6R4 made some of us buy an MG Metro..
Original Mini Cooper, successful from it's racing and rallying heritage..
Saab 2-smokes driven by old Erik Carlsson..

The list goes on, but..

Citroen? They gave us a slightly worse version of a standard road car. Top marketing there..

Only 4 wins of a race that hardly anyone apart from the most ardent motorsport fan watches, and the last win in 1996, in a car nothing like a real road car, that went out of production shortly after :-)

I know, but this is part of Citroen's heritage - doing the Paris Dakar in a Citroen 2CV, using squashed up Bananas to lube the gearbox when the sand got in! :-D
And what about the beloved DS in the Morrocan Rally:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaHuTvV ... el=ennemme
And the DS won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1959 & 1966. :-D
I don't know, but rallying through the rice paddy fields isn't going to be the same somehow. :(

People who "know" Citroen did that are either dead or we soon will be :)

Cars and legends of motorsport only live on when they are marketed well, hence the success of the Impreza, Evo, Escort Cosworth and Quattro. The motorsport fans buy them, love them, their kids grow up around them, perhaps they buy one because it was cool when they were a kid... and their kids.. etc etc. Citroen never bothered to try any of that road-car stuff with any of their faster cars. I bet you can name Renaults, Peugeots and Alpines that won rallies quite regularly. People who know about Citroen's small motorsport victories are either dead, or going that way..

I expect an 18 year old rally fan these days is about as likely to be interested that a DS won the Monte 56 years ago, as I would have been in the fact that Cathcart-Jones, driving a Lagonda won the Monte in 1935 (which would have been 56 years ago when I was 18)

Sad really, as the Xsara and C4 WRC cars were perhaps *the* greatest rally cars ever made..

I was simply pointing out that the cars that they drove in rallies were actual production cars that you saw on the roads, like the 2CV, DS, SM, CX, BX, Saxo, C4 etc. etc., to name a few and all these did influence me when I was a nipper. I've driven lots of other cars, but only ever owned Citroen's because of that influence.

A lot of 205 owners/lovers don't even know PSA own both companies.

When a group of them at the Ace Cafe (really nice rebuilds and obviously well loved by them) asked me if I fitted the Hydro-Active suspension myself I knew Citroen was lost
