Dispatch - replacement engine

Post by The Dog Walker »

Morning all, new here, so Hello.

I bought a Citroen Dispatch 1.9 2003 late last year. Cutting a long story short, it's in the garage and has been for a while and finally diagnosed as Head Gasket gone. It's also got a valve stuck and an injector gunked up. Matey in the garage has suggested that It may be cheaper to replace the engine. Any thoughts or suggestions ?

I bought a Peugeot 807 a few years back after it had received a reconditioned engine and to say that wasn't a good experience would be an understatement!!

Thanks

Agree, a cheap "Recon unit" is often not as trustworthy as a good'un from a rust bucket/crashed one....there must me a good number of suitable units around.

That was probably just the 807 though

Which engine has your van got in? The reason I ask is, I have a 1.9TD engine with new cylinder head for sale. It's out of a Peugeot 806 so suspect it may not be suitable for yours, mine's an 8 valve by the way

2003 Id have said ALL XUD engines be dead and not used. Id be inclined to say its a 2.0 HDi mistaken for a 1.9 ... I may be wrong.

Had a few quotes through for a replacement engine ranging from £225 to £525 excl delivery and VAT. One of them came back and said that there were two different engines for this van and asked was there a wire on injector number 4. None of the others have asked this and 7 have sent me quotes (6 through breaker yard.com) anyone know if there are actually two engines and if so what the difference is ? Cheers

the basic end - block and head will be the same, you can or WILL need to swap all your stuff across from your engine...

Its likely to be a DW8 engine being 1.9d at this age..

the wire on Inj 4 (or 3) is a sensor wire fitted to later XUD's I think, my xantia 1998 had it but I don't think my earlier ones did..
this wire is a needle lift sensor wire, which is used to help the minimal electronics time the fueling I think..
as Paul says, the main bit of engine will be the same under the fueling stuff.. shame you cant put Kens TD in, but that involves intercooling and insurance pains.. and maybe other stuff..

So, after some further investigation the garage have suggested that I don't put any more money into the existing engine and that I should definitely replace it. I now have two options, buy a second hand one which will cost about £700 delivered to the garage with a warranty of a couple of months or spend twice that on a remanufactured engine with a 12 month warranty. I know nothing about remanufactured engines but assume that the expensive option would greatly reduce future risk ? Any thoughts or opinions would be most welcome. Extract below from the email re the remanufactured engine

All Ivor Searle remanufactured engines are supplied with a new timing belt (if required), oil filter, fitting gaskets and if petrol, unleaded. They are fitted with new timing chain (if fitted) / pistons / rings / pins, bearings, gaskets and seals.

All of our remanufactured engines are built to the BS AU257.2002 Code of Practice, are fully tested prior to dispatch and come with a 12 month parts & labour, unlimited mileage warranty.

That looks to me like a new timing belt if it has one rather than a timing chain.

Check how much another van is - time you have spent 700 on an engine, plus 300 or so to fit it, you will not be far off the replacement cost I would think....

I'd look in the Ebay listings for a complete vehicle with a good engine and make one out of two then flog off the remaining spares. :) I note there's a Dispatch 1.9D disability van on there at the moment...........Now wasn't someone on here looking for a van to convert to a camper.

The NA 1.9D is a DW8 although it has more in common with the XUD than other DW's which are HDi.

At least with a HDi engine you have to disassemble the whole front end and pull the engine out to remoce the head so why not change the whole engine while you're at it if you have a better one available?

Part of my problem is that the van is caged out in the back for dogs and I'd also recently had it sign written hence the reason for trying to resurrect this one rather than starting again. My worry with a second hand engine is there no guarantee what state it's in and that I won't end up back in the same place a few months down the line. I'm thinking that a remanufactured one has got to be a lot more dependable and probably outlast the rest of the van!!
