C8 2.2Hdi immobilizer fault.

Post by h2ocooler »

Hi All
I have a 2003 c8 2.2hdi exclusive that had been fine until recently.
I lent it to my sister and bro in-law whilst they were looking for another car, while they had it, it started to play up, Engine immobilizer fault came up a few times but would start after a while.
I now have the car back (when I collected it it did it but did start after a few mins and was fine all the way back to kent from Yorkshire even when I stopped a few times) but it now refuses to start, and the immobilizer fault is constant (cannot see it now as economy mode is on but it was coming on as soon as the ignition was turned on), tired another antenna coil but still nothing, unfortunately I do not have a second key to try incase the transponder chip has gone.
I have tried different batteries (the one on it was new last summer) had it on charge, jump starts but nothing, tried the BSI reset too.
When I try to start it all the warning lights apart from the charge light goes out but do flash on randomly.
I have Lexia but it will not read the engine ECU (it does see it but just a ? in the fault section)
Any thoughts?
Or does anyone have one they are breaking for the ECU, BSI, Keys, locks etc. as I'm thinking it may have failed.

Is the cover for the under bonnet fuse box fitted correctly & clipped in properly. They have a seal in the lids to make them water tight, There is a conveniently placed scuttle drain right above it, when they get water in it can cause all sorts of strange electrical problems.
Has anyone spilled anything on the dash & not let on ? might be worth pulling the BSI out for a look ?

h20cooler, you could do worse than to join this group

Tons of info on there and usually quite a few being broken due to the unreliability of the breed.

Yes I have joined the group and posted the same lol.
Tried with Lexia this morning and it will not read anything but the aux heating, I pulled the BSI (if that is the one on the left of the engine bay) and there was 3 corroded fuses as well as a bit of white on the board but it was dry, cleaned it up but the starter motor has now given up!!!!

When I turn the ignition on the display says economy mode then goes blank, I get a few warning bongs then all the dash displays (odo and trip) and lights apart from the charge light go out, guessing the BSI is toast.
If I get a BSI off ebay can I re programme any one to work with my engine ecu or will I have to replace the set including the key ??

Ok so the unit under the bonnet is not the BSI but the BMS/fuse box, well it was fuses 3 & 4 (handbook says 4 is for the BSI) were badly corroded, along with 14, only problem is that there is no part number sticker on it, would any C8 one work or does it have to be the same number??

There are quite a few different BSM units - but I don't know if C8 uses different ones. The prices vary quite a lot too..... If you post up the last 8 digits of the VIN we can get a part no / price for it, and see if there are others for the C8. It should have a number on it somewhere - but this may not be the Cit part number for earlier cars.

Fuse box problems on these cars is a reugular problem. They can look ok from the top, but water ingress causes corrosion problems and you can't see it til it's too late. The most successful mod seems to be to fit a shower cap over them to keep the water out. Quality! :-(

Hi
The chassis number is 13040848.
It looks like there was supposed to be a sticker on it (looking at all the ones on Ebay for sale) but that is missing on mine.
I bought a new starter today but they have given me the wrong one, the pinion is too small!!! will change it tomorrow.
Its a shame that C5 parts don't fit, I have access to one that I could borrow parts from but I did check and the BSM is different.
I really need to get this sorted ASAP and I need to get it MOT'd at the weekend, we are supposed to be off to France in it on the 20th.

Part no 6500 CK. Unfortunately it's not a cheap one....

00006500CK FUSE BOX 162.51 GBP 195.01 GBP 195.01 GBP

It says it should be marked one of the following: 9661682880 9661682980 9661682780

The number should be printed on it somewhere, eg see this pic

If you look on ebay, you can search on both the part number and the number stamped on the board - often the later will turn up more hits. Also fitted to:

1 document(s) found for C4
1 document(s) found for C5 II
1 document(s) found for C8
1 document(s) found for DISPATCH COMBI
1 document(s) found for DISPATCH III

And also for Pug

1 document(s) found for 307
1 document(s) found for 307 RESTYLING
1 document(s) found for 607 RESTYLING
1 document(s) found for 807
1 document(s) found for EXPERT 3

Thanks Richard
I have had a look at some of the BSM's on ebay with them numbers and they are all different, mine has the plugs with the red sliding latch and looks like this onehttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-Citro ... xyLN9Sn1PH

I get one and its not the same part number will it work at all (let the car start) but without some of the options working (like sunroofs etc.) or will it just not do anything?

There are a few ecu sets on ebay with the key, engine ecu, BSM and BSI for the 2.2, would it work if it was all taken from the same car (all matched) or could there still be problems, I have Lexia so can re configure some of the options if needed (and able to)
Sorry for all the questions.

I fitted one to my C4 Picasso with a different number; I could start the engine, but the wipers didn't work - the car also knew it was the wrong one when Lexia was plugged in! So, answer is it might work and let you drive it, but then again it might not....The BSM is not programmed, so there's no need for all the other bits, you just need the right BSM unit....

Didn't read the whole story so forgive me if I jump into some wrong alleys or places already covered.
The starter pinion size should not be an issue. The pitch of the teeth is generally the same and the starter motor end housing places the pinion at the correct radius from the flywheel centre. The only time this information would be wrong is if someone fitted an incorrect pinion to the starter. The old British lucas starters were a different issue where the number of teeth was critical.
As regards the immobiliser. The Bosch EDC 16 ECU can have intermittent can bus problems. I do not know if that will give the warning you are getting on the dash or not. If the car is refusing to start tap the engine ECU switch off the ignition and back on again and see if it starts. If you have access to diagnostics read live data from the BSI and check that it sees a key transponder and if it recognises it as the correct one. Read the BSI and check for faults relating to communication with the engine ECU
If problems are found check the wiring and if that shows up nothing you are probably looking at changing the ecu. Buy one wherever and get it cloned off your old one. It is then plug and play and both the old and new units can be swapped anytime.

Hi all
I have tried to read the Ecu's but lexia will not communicate with them, It always used to (it would only read some when I used to go in with the car set as a C8 but would read them all if I set it as a C5) I have ordered a complete set of ecu's, Engine, BSI, BMS and keys off of a guy that breaks C8's from a car the same, will change all of them when they arrive as see what happens, only thing left then would be the Comm2000, I do have one off a C5 I could try but not sure if it will work.
Will let you know what happens.
