XANTIA FRONT SEAT REMOVAL?

Post by HDI »

Am removing the front seats from my '96 Xantia. Should have been a simple job, but no! The rear, slide retaining bolts are covered by the top of the seat slide, so can't be accessed. So, I'm guessing there is a trick to releasing the slide stop so the seat can be slid fully forward, if so, could somebody enlighten me please?

Do you have manual seats or electric ?

In any case, you should be able to get just enough clearance for the rear bolts by sliding the seat fully forward. It helps if you release the plastic side trim first as well - it just lifts up vertically and is held on by some metal clips.

I find a torx driver for a 3/8" ratchet with a short extension is much easier for this job than a torx screw driver, as you need to tilt it to the side a bit to clear other obstacles.

I've done both manual and electric seats before and didn't find it particularly difficult - provided you can slide the seat fully forwards and backwards. I don't suppose you undid the front bolts and left them in place, preventing you from sliding the seat far enough forward ? Check that it is not catching on anything at the front.

Manual seats. I think you might have hit on the issue though. I've fully loosened the front bolts but not removed them, so does removing them allow the seat to slid further forward?

Yes if you have loosened the front bolts but left them in place the runners will snag on the bolt heads preventing you fully sliding the seat forward.

So slide the seat back, remove the front two bolts completely then slide it right forward again and you should get enough movement to expose the rear bolts. I have a vague memory that pulling the release lever on manual seats up a bit higher than usual might let it slide further too, but its been 10 years since I worked on manual seats so I might be imagining that bit...

I find it quicker to do the rear bolts first then slide the seat back and do the fronts. then if you undo them you can get them out with the plastic screw parts attached, and makes it a tiny bit quicker to get them back in again. That way you only have one of them to mess with keeping still to get the bolt right out :rofl2:

with electric seats its easier to get the seat sat upright and the base as far up as it goes. the only ones i struggle with are the basic passenger ones with no height adjust!

edit: and on interior #3 now i've got quite adept at removing them and the centre console :-D

Thanks. They're out but I'll follow your method when I remove the old ones from my user and install these 'new' ones! The '96 seats are replacing '99 seats, but are in SIGNIFICANTLY better condition! Although a different trim colour!

Xantia 1 door cards are diffferent to Xantia II cards. The section that blends into the dash doesn't match. Discovered that when a buyer took the leather interior from my Exclusive to install in his Activa. They will fit but don't look right, for me anyway.

Really? Thought the only difference was the bin under the armrest/handle!

Yes thanks. They are out and loose in the donor car until I have a little time to finish the swap. Same for the rear seat. There is one other issue, the HDi has front seat side air bags, the TD doesn't, so the HDi won't now! Hope it won't throw up a fault light!
