Xantia 99 1.9 TD immobiliser problem - lexia results help needed

Post by ecohouse1 »

Chris morewood kindly lent me his lexia. I managed to clear a raft of faullt codes found mainly related to failure to identify key codes and more worryingly intermittent failure to get a response from the engine ecu. Anyway managed to clear codes and was able to start engine. Drove back home and left car 45 mins and on going back out the beeping and flashing key symbol returned. Plugged in lexia and I'm getting permanent fault - no response from engine ecu. My speedo and temp guage are still kaput too although maybe unrelated.

I don't currently have the 4 digit security code and it look s like I need this to have an option to reset anything?

Is there much I can do with the lexia at this stage or do I need to call an auto electrian? Hope itas not the end of my old Xantia

Thanks Alan

Having done some web research it appears that a bad earth or power supply can cause these symptoms with some reports of cleaning earths making improvements. I had cleaned all the N/S wing earths last year and the gearbox top earth. Is there any others I might have missed that would affect the immobiliser/ecu? I have also heard that there is a relay that can cause problems near the ECU> I noticed a back rectangular piece in beside the ecu and a green relay. Is it either of these?

Just off the phone with Arnold Clark Citroen who refuse to give out the 4 digit security code unless the car is recovered and taken directly to the dealer! Unbelievable!! That would not be a cost effective solution.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

There was also someone on here who could provide... Birdman I think his name was... Not seen him active for some time now but worth a shot... Think he used to advertise on eBay too..

Just had a thought Alan.
Try running an extra earth cable.
My earth gave up the ghost in the middle of Aberdeen a couple of years ago.. the cable looked fine but had obviously gone inside. I just ran an extra cable, battery to earth and she's run fine ever since..I have some spares if you want try before you buy..
Working nights tonight but off tomorrow and Wed.. let me know and I'll leave one out for you.

Thanks Chris, I could try a heavy duty jump cable as an option to improve engine to body earth? Apart from the nearside inner wing and on top of the gearbox is there another earth I am missing. The engine turns over really quickly though especially since I fitted new battery terminals. Also with regard to wiring below the radiator, what should I be looking for in terms of corrosion.

When I looked last year ,around my fan issues, all I saw was a tightly packed bunch of wires inside a corrugated tube. Should I pull all of these out and inspect or is there a well known point of deterioration on the xantia I could look for.

I also see mention of issues with the engine fuse box - would there be a suspect to look for there. From looking at it last year I couldn't see how to get in around the underside of the relays and fuses, or do I need too?

I am assuming I have an intermittant issue as the engine was running great yesterday and the key light symbol disappearing almost instantly on inserting the key.

CitroJim, do you by any chance have a diagram of the ecu plug contacts, I am looking for the supply and earth pins so I can check if my ECU is connected properly.

Many thanks

Yes, I most possibly do... Can you please bear with me until about 5 this evening and then I'll look and see. If I have I'll scan it up...

(dont know why this didn't get sent last night) The earth problem I had was intermittent to begin with.. then the wire failed internally caused the instruments to flick around when starting.. I just let it in place and doubled it up with another .. but thinking about it could all of you problems be caused by a bad earth?
My bike had a similar problem.. took ages of thinking and going through various scenarios, to figure out what it was..it would run when it was dry but cut out when it got wet..but not straight away. found a wire to the ignition timing had lost its insulation on the bottom of the radiator in an innaccessible place.. even the BMW garage didn't figure out that one!
I wonder if you've got a similar problem.. but short of checking every wire..or replacing part of the wiring loom... Sorry I cant be of more help .. Those with higher mileage Mk1's mat be able to shed some more light as to failure points... but as I said the garage is at your disposal if you need somewhere covered, dry and (relatively) warm to work.
I hope the lesamisdudiag site was of help.

You only need this if you want to re-code keys, so don't worry too much about it - you are not there yet!

Alan, this might help you...

Here's the S2 1.9TD Injection Circuits and Harnesses:

Injection Circuit

Injection Harness

You can see the ECU plug pin numbers there and if you look closely at the plug itself you will see the numbers embossed on its face...

Note that the numbers run in sequence from 1 to whatever along one row and then in sequence again along the next...

I'll see if I can find a diagram of the plug later...

Thanks Chris and Jim, will investigate earth and 12V supply issues on Saturday and see if I can get rid of the pesky flashing key light. I cant help thinking damp has got into something after the recent floods and causing mayhem. Will keep everyone posted.

I am not very good with circuit diagrams, so to help me out can you confirm the pins I need to check for earth and the supply? !! Thanks Mention is also made on the similar problem with the HDi that problems occur at the engine fuse box - is this where the fuses and relays plug in ie increased resistance or is there a Xantia weakness for wires to break inside their plastic coating?

Electrics are definitely my strong point. Give me oily bits and rusty bolts any day!!!

Yes, they do!

Alan,

ECU earths are pins 17,18,34 and 35.

12V supplies are pins 16 and 33 via the double relay...
