Going from 2.2 to a 2.0 HDI (110) Advice Needed :)

Post by IHateMySelf »

Hi,

You may or may not remember a few months back I acquired a questionable vehicle now known to me as a C5 :D

Seen as I do 50 miles a day it has turned into an amusing practical joke on wheels amongst colleagues to see if I will make it to work today, however I do rack up a few quid when I do show up :) (in case you where all wondering, yes, you can fill 20 liters of water into your radiator everyday for a month and it will still trooper on :D)

The C5 I have now is a 2.2 HDI automatic (MK1) Exclusive with HM3+ with a respectable 150,000 miles on the clock .... The car I am looking at buying is a 2.0 110 (MK1) VTR Manual with what I think is just normal HM3 suspension (non plus = no sport button?) with 80,000 miles on the clock and wanted to know what the difference between both cars would be.

I'm not interested in trim levels, more interested in the mechanics/electrics of both cars. For example, seen as it has already done 80,000 miles, what sort of things should I be expecting to go wrong, or what should I be looking out for that should have been done but hasn't been?

Thanks guys :)

PS: a question regarding the HM3 vs HM3+ ... does the normal HM3 have the comfy feeling the HM3+ has? Someone said to me the 'normal' setting on both cars are actually different and that the HM3+ has different comfort settings, for better or worst I can't remember now.

Why do you want to change? The engine of the 2,2 hdi has balancer shafts and should be silky smooth compared to 2,0 hdi.

The suspension should still be like a magic carpet on the VTR. And as stated elsewhere on the site, the original 2.0 HDi is probably the best engine Peugeot-Citroen ever made for reliability. It the other bits of the car you would have to worry about like steering racks, bearings etc etc.

Only until you get a bad frost one night then hiss bang! :-D

Regular servicing is the key, the only issues I had with my 110 SX were anti roll bar / drop links, steering rack and rear exhaust box, Comms 2000 unit; never changed the clutch in the 150k miles until I traded her in. Obviously not as nippy as the 2.2, but never let me down.

I have had both and while the 2.2 was a very smooth and generally nice car the fuel consumption was dreadful, not much more then 40 mpg locally so I sold and and bought the 2.0. Hdi. The fuel consumption is much improved and the engine is much easier to work on, its smooth enough although I don't think the ride is as good as the 2.2 which was hydractive.

Depending on how and where you drive a consumption of 50-60+ mpg is obtainable from the 2.0. so that was my main reason for changing, and the 2.0. engine is virtually bombproof - the 8 valve one that is.

hi Marc,
they don't have a Dual Mass Flywheel either.
I thought all c5 Hdi's did? and the Xantia HDi110 didn't?

I can't say for the Xantias per se but again my 110 Xantia had a solid flywheel and again never changed that or the clutch on either.

My '52 C5 2.0 HDi 110 certainly had a DMF as I had it and the clutch replaced at approximately 130,000 miles.

Does the 2.2 hdi have 16 valves? Possibly only a few early 01 2.0 8V HDI C5's without DMF. After that, they all got them.
Peter: If you were getting 40mpg around the block with 2.2..........that is not bad at all?

Lexi. 40 mpg is very bad for me, I rarely drive at more than 60 mph, do most of my driving on rural roads and generally drive like a Grandad - which I am. I used to get 50+mpg from my 2.1. XMs on a longish journey and get 60 mpg+ from my 2.0. hdi 406 estate, in fact going to Yorkshire last year I managed an indicated 71.1 mpg on the journey up.

I'm pretty sure that the 2.0. 8 valve in the C5 and the 406 has a DMF, well in the 110 hp version at least, I have just bought another 406 which has had one fitted.

Incidentally, the 110 bhp cars have a cheaper tax rate as the Co2 is lower, 149g km, tax was £145 this year.

Yeah the cheap tax disc was one of my reasons for buying Donk. I can't take to going out and looking for a 2.2 guys. Yes the 130 brake would be nice for towing, but my little 2 litre manages a 16ft Compass Caravan ok and the boats. If you have a good 2.2 then fine. However to go look for one? I think they are more problematic to fix up. An odd guy has one that is good on fuel, but the majority say otherwise.
I drive the same as you Peter. If there is economy to be got, I will get it. I have put enough fuel in guzzlers over the years. My hobby now is putting as little money as possible into oil company profits!
So 2.2 is higher insurance, higher ved, lower mpg, Dpf, costly and hard to remove injectors, swirly valve problems, extra spheres as standard..........owt else?
