C5 X7 Sat-nav removal.

Post by Lenny »

Evening all.

I've been to see a couple of C5s recently and have been specifically looking for an Exclusive Tourer without Sat-nav.
Personally I think the system that was fitted 2008-2010 is a bit dated and annoying so I'd prefer one without so I can replace the OE cd player with something that is ipod friendly and take it from there.

I've just been to see somebody with a 2010 C5 Exclusive that is hopefully coming up for sale soon and it is fine apart from the fact that it originally had sat nav fitted. Worse than that is the fact that the screen is apparently redundant and disconnected as the first owner removed the cd-player/head unit bit and stuck a different stereo in place.

My question is can I replace the screen part of the dash with a used none sat-nav part without doing anything else and expect things to work?
Is there another chunk of electronic gubbins to be removed anywhere?
Will everything be simple plug & play or something more sinister?

I realise that this is a complicated one but the car is spot on apart from this issue and I'm hoping this is a bargaining point rather than a complete nightmare.

Like anything head unit and screenwise - it will need to be configured at the very least. There are many here that have upgraded / downgraded their systems and it's not too difficult. What they will need to know is the full audio system you have and the system you want to replace it with or better still some pictures of what is there and what you want. :-D
I don't understand your question: "My question is can I replace the screen part of the dash with a used none sat-nav part without doing anything else and expect things to work"?
The sat nav is handled by the head unit not the display. Does the car have the big colour 7" display? If it does and it has been disabled, the parking assistance visuals won't display either.
If we knew exactly what system the car was factory fitted with we can help further. Suggest getting it back to how it was originally so you can see exactly what it has / doesn't have and then you can proceed from there.
There are loads of post on here about various mods and retrofits. Here's one about the ipod USB box I dug up (scroll down to Vborovic's post), but without knowing your system / car ....

Thanks for trying to help.
It's a bit of a strange one as I haven't seen inside the car yet! I knocked on the owners door last night on the off-chance that he was thinking of selling his car soon and it turns out he is. The car, the year, the mileage and history are all just what I'm after.
It's a 2010 C5 Exclusive Tourer and apparently was originally fitted with Myway according to the owner. The current owner is the second owner and the system was not complete when he bought the car.
Presumably the first owner of the car didn't get on with the system as he replaced the head unit part of the system with a conventional CD/radio. The screen is still installed in the dash but does nothing apart from fill a gap.
I'd be more than happy to replace the screen with the glorified digital clock that would've been fitted if the car had originally been specced with a simple RD4 cd/radio and then fit my current Alpine iDA305s for music duties.
I know I can fit the Alpine with an interface to use the steering wheel controls and I'm quite prepared to live with the fact that radio information will not show up in the glorified digital clock thingy.
My real question is if I replace the Myway screen with the glorified digital clock type thingy will the clock simply plug in to the same wiring and enable me to use the parking sensors, outside temp display etc?

Lenny, just had a good look through the screen options for the X7 Tourer. There are 2 basic screens the one you fondly refer to as the 'glorified digital clock thingy' (I'll refer to this as Type C) and the large colour screen. Having said that...... there are a myriad of variations on the Type 'C' screen. Part numbers go 6596 E6, 6593 E7, H7, P2, P3, T8, T9, K4, P4, P5, T6, T7! Then within these there seem to be [RP 98 098 429 80] & [RP 98 034 624 80] again all depending on the build date and audio options on the unit.
Now some people have upgraded from the basic stereo and small monochrome screen to the navigation & colour screen system, replacing the fascia, buying the cable connectors and configuring options with the lexia etc. In your case have you tried to find a cable for the alpine to interface with the colour screen that is there already and steering wheel controls? I've had a quick look and can see this would be compatible with the older model of the C5:
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine- ... ng-adaptor
I'll have another look - but it makes sense to keep the decent screen if possible without loosing other functionality if you can get the alpine hooked up. :-D

I spent ages looking for a post like this you did - but it had a table I think, with all the differences between the units - but can't remember if it was here or on GPS Underground!
Anyway - he still has the issue with the alpine and getting a compatible connector for either the colour screen or one of the type C screens - but like I've said, depends on whatever other functionality you are prepared to loose with going back to the Type C.

Lenny - there's also a stack of adapters here, but I've run out of time looking for a possible solution tonight - they seem to have the Alpine interface - you just match up the right connector for the functions you need and then bung on the reversing sensor connector etc. if you need that. Might be worth giving them a call once you know what exactly has been left int he car! :-D

If one fits aftermarket radio, why would it need to talk with car's own display? Aftermarket radios tend to have their own display - at least my Kenwood HU has got it.

The original smaller screen is needed for the display of reverse parking sensors, otherwise it just tells time, date and temperature. Some C5's show reverse parking image also in that small display between speedo and rpm dials, but that doesn't work at least on my -08 Exclusive with colour display.

One example:

The small multifunction in the centre of the dials shows amongst other things the parking space gap measurement display- the reversing display is maintained on the centre console display (whether on the small monochrome or colour system).
I guess the model you are intending to buy won't have the reversing camera option for that year - otherwise another thing the larger screen would be needed for. Put it this way, you have nothing to lose by the sounds of it - you should be able to pick up a new smaller dash surround when you fit a smaller screen.

Excellent advice everybody. Thank you all.
I'll not let the dodgy stereo/sat nav problems put me off buying the car then (as long as the price is right!)
Cheers,
Lenny.
