2002 C5 2l hdi clutch change?? Whats involved?

Post by Timmo »

Hi all,
a good buddy of mine has just got himself an '02 c5 2l hdi, previous owner had it for 4 years, looked after it relatively well, but admitted to my mate he put a cheap clutch and Solid flywheel in it last year, Matt said its bloomin lovely to drive except for the feeling the engine wants to shake itself to death, he plans to do a clutch and flywheel swap with a Goodun in march after he has saved a few quid, he offered me the job for cash but i said i would Help him instead! ;-)
in comparison temrs to the Xantia td, how Much different is the box off job on the C5?? are there any specific tools different to those on the Xant needed?? From what i remember, the Xant td is infinately easier than the Xant hdi to do the same job on, but after searching through 21 pages of results for 'C5 Clutch change' on here i couldnt find anything specific.

the job isnt going to be done for a while, but just helps to get a good heads up before hand! (helps me!)
having trailed through what seemed like an Endless list of images on the 'big boys toys cornwall' page on fb to find the car details i thought i'd post a picture for you all too! he managed to get it for under 500, recemt belts etc.

many thanks for all pointers!!!

Nice beast! Those are the best 500 quid workhorses on the road.
I will be all ears on replies. I have a strange feeling with this clutch of mine. Not slipping but some strange tinkling noises from bell housing area on tick over.
My Donk went 115 miles to pull a 16ft caravan back home today. Great towing vehicles! Suspension is brill for towing.
From what I have heard, there is no problem putting a solid flywheel kit on our basic 8V cars. I think Valeo do a specific kit for £240?

Timmo the xantia hdi runs a solid i think .
I wonder if the cheap clutch was the issue here.. with my 8v I would have put a xantia flywheel second hand and a decent clutch on .. in this case maybe a good clutch kit is all it needs.
Check engine mounts while you are there..
Lexi what's a donk  ?

It's a beast of burden John . Sums up the 8v C5. That vehicle can do most what my Land Rovers did. It can also cruise, on mile munching journeys and sip fuel. Carries lots of load without breaking springs or sagging. When I had a Patrol 4.2d I was on Aussie forum,Outer Limits 4x4. All the guys called their Patrol's ........Donks. A do anything no frills vehicle.

The clutch shouldn't be too bad - I've done a 2.0HDI 16V with the 6 speed box that was a bit of a pig, but there will be more room for the 5 speed. On the one we did the PAS return hose ran underneath the end of the box and had to be disconnected - if you have to do this take the lid off the LDS reservoir first to minimise loss, then clamp the rubber part and be ready to block the metal part. Clutch is pull type where the bearing has to be clipped into the pressure plate - Paul does this by pushing on the release arm via the starter motor hole rather than making a tool and pulling on it from the slave cylinder end. You may well need to remove the main fuse box to get access to the gearbox mounting - in which case take care when re-tightening the +ve feed - my mate managed to break off the post on his.....! It's reasonably well covered in the BOL.
