Bought some diesel in Cornwall on Friday for 97.7. My heating oil is now 27.5, I paid 32.5 the end of last year and that was about half what it was a couple of years ago, now it would be £50.00 per 1000 litres cheaper.

Still a lot more than the 4/6d a gallon it was when I started driving, used to go into the garage and ask for a pounds worth.

Was in the petrol station the other week and a 3.3V6 Grand Espace drew up next to me - guy put £10 unleaded in. Must have got him just past the end of the road!!

No, if it has the ES9 engine (or the Renault equivalent) they are more economical than at first suspected.. It likely took him to the other side of town at least!

How long before they decide to impose the 'deferred' rise in duty?

Top quality standard diesel currently 0.90€ (69p) a litre here. Really welcome, for as long it lasts.

Days of dirt-cheap heating oil in Surrey (1998 to 2004) seem long gone. Price was 8p a litre in '98, and climbed to 24p by '03.

Not updated this for a long time, but recent rises in crude in forecourt prices prompted me to look it out. I've updated the table on the front page, but here is the latest data:

Here's the data. Crude in £ / barrel, UL £/l / index, Diesel £/l / index
01/05/18 Crude: 54.22, UL 1.239 / 0.835, Diesel 1.269 / 0.881
26/01/15 Crude: 20.94, UL 1.019 / 1.285, Diesel 0.999 / 1.206
19/08/15 Crude: 31.15, UL 1.159 / 1.239, Diesel 1.129 / 1.158
23/01/15 Crude: 32.02, UL 1.059 / 0.945, Diesel 1.129 / 1.127
16/01/15 Crude: 31.70, UL 1.059 / 0.954, Diesel 1.129 / 1.138

So fuel is currently relatively cheap - so expect further rises in the near future! OPEC aiming at $100 / barrel... If the index goes back up to 1 this means a forecourt price of £1.35 at $75/bbl. At $100 bbl it means £1.57  I think we could see £1.40 by the end of the year, perhaps more if the oil price continues to surge!

Perhaps I'll rethink buying a C-Crosser / 4007 at sub 40mpg..... :?

This is all useful and interesting stuff. Something I don't understand:

The rac foundation publishes a price breakdown. Based on £1.232 a litre (so a bit before your figure) it says 40p wholesale including refining, 1.9p delivery and distribution, total duty and VAT 78.05p, leaving retail margin 2.80p. That 2.80p covers costs and profit.

I normally fill up in South Cambs/N Herts, we often go you Keighley in Yorkshire where father in law is in a nursing home.

2 weeks ago I paid £1.23 in a supermarket down here and on the same day £1.13 in a supermarket in Keighley. That's typical, I see a difference of 9p to 12p per litre year round, its not a special offer. Where my Daughter lives, N Manchester, its roughly the same price as down here.

I can understand that distribution varies a bit, a lot in remote areas, and also see that low volume rural operators need to charge a lot more to stay solvent, but why does a Sainsbury's vary by 10p if the typical retail margin is only 2.8p?
