Number 1 in the diagram, specifically the joint is at the left hand end of it in the diagram.

That's not bad at all... Should be easy enough to get the welding done..
On the disc, check the calliper is not suffering the old favourite corrosion problem which has the effect of wearing the pads wedge-shaped due to the caliper being pushed out of square - this often results in poor disc contact and the resultant corrosion.

Re: Inner rack joint on Xantia
Did this job on my C15 over Christmas, Haynes suggests a special tool is needed: a small (10"?) "stilson" will do the trick or, at a pinch a pair of water pump pliers.
Oh, & a clothes peg is very useful for keeping the boot back out of the way on reassembly.
The boot involves a certain amount of grief, so if they are anything like the same, I'd recommend new ones, so you don't have the struggle of removing the old ones - just a thought.

Re: Inner rack joint on Xantia
Thanks guys, aim to have a look about it dreckly, check all the oddities, also gives me a break from the tired girls!
Welding done, but not without its troubles! Not the car but ran out of wire 3/4 the way yesterday, shot out before the school run to the local welding places, none had the wire in stock, had to give up for the school run, popped down the surplus tools shop as he had some gasless mig wire in, then the tensioner spool wasnt happy as it was 0.8 wire instead of 0.9, couldnt get a smooth feed, got fed up and called it a night, - I had been Mizzly All day too, sat on the drive on a picnic rug!
Went around the 4 local welding shops this morning for a 0.8 tensioner spool, no one had one in stock, so had to grin and bare it! Managed okay, got it finished and smoothed down, undersealed and back down for a retest on the way to tesco!
Car has done less than 3k miles since last mot, and other than the gearbox falling off its mount back on November half term, oil and filter change For the mot, I am pretty sure i've done Nothing too it!

Nothing is Ever simple is it!
I was close to washing the car as a present to it for not costing me the earth! But then figured, it could wait for the weekend!

Some things are.. Those you think are going to be horribly difficult and complex can turn out easy... Xantia handbrake cables for instance...Timmo wrote:Nothing is Ever simple is it!
Not good weather for washing cars at the moment so wise to wait until it warms up at the weekend...

Ahh, course, you're right down in the bottom left aren't you! Different weather there!
been quite chilly up here for a while now although it's due to change this weekend and back to balminess again.. Personally I love this cold, clear sunny weather and much prefer it to warm, wet and grey...

Its probably worth jetwashing the crud and grit off anyway as it can play havoc (and you don't want to be doing more welding )
