On the telly this afternoon! It does have a story behind it as you might expect.

And if it's where I think it is, I have a link to it as well.... albeit tenuous ! You see that breakwater in the picture ? I used to do the maintenance on all of them along the seafront back in the 1990s.
I told you it was tenuous :-D

Looks a bit like to outline of a Canberra bomber to me but just a very wild guess...

I don't know the precise location of the photo but there could be 6 Marlets somewhere in the picture :!:

One of the towns on the "route" of the flight has achieved notoriety last night of course

Well had it been a colour photograph the aircraft would have been shown in all its shiny red glory.

Time to reveal to put up one's Dukes. In the 1950's Neville Duke took the air speed record flying over Littlehampton in 1953, while Geoff Duke (presumably no relation) was crowned "Sportsman of the Year" in 1951 before the TV show had been invented :)

...and yes nothing to do with the FS but worth a re-airing. Came up, and probably was lost, in the VW Emissions thread. If you want some decent emissions,...also from the East Lancs Railway, try a Deltic triple header.

Not your normal "picture of the day" but an interesting discovery for me nonetheless. I was curious to find out about such things as the development of transport systems within the UK from the days when the horse was king to the current day when the automobile is king.

The network of roads and distribution of settlements we use today, have much to do with the infrastructure established to facilitate transport by means of the horse, and its effective capacity and limitations. Staging posts every 15 miles.

This from 1828 is "Cary's New Itinerary" extends to 821 pages, and is remarkably available in full in a pdf file via "google books".
This is a reproduction of a library book that was digitized by Google as part of an ongoing effort to preserve the information in books and make it universally accessible.

I think I'll put it in the snug at the Pickled Egg should anyone want to paddle through it to extract some interesting snippet about their locality.
