Xantia 1.9 TD Mk2 Timing Belt and Rear arm bearings

Hi

So been to the garage today and the Xantia needs new offside trailing arm bearings. The mechanic did not charge me for the advice but he said get a new car. To be honest I don't have the funds nor the inclination to buy a new(er) car and I am way too in love with driving around an 18 year old car that can smoothly carry a tonne in the back and still do the speed limit.

Also I think I need to adjust and replace the timing belt and or auxillary belt. Have searched forums today but struggling to find anyone that has done a timing belt with pictures if possible. Same for trailing arm bearing - anyone got any pics / and advice and or moral support.

Get yourself a Haynes manual they are not very dear, it will also show you how to change the trailing arm bearings, will cost you about £60 if you do it yourself.

You may get a manual in a charity shop. I get mine for a quid.
Those jobs are a pain in the winter, less you have a bit of shelter.

Timing belt not too bad Ben . I have a pic somewhere showing the engine side on. It should be on the forum somewhere but I can't remember where .. will try and look later.. thinking about it it could be in the blogs section..
As said both jobs you really want to be dry and sheltered ..
You say adjust it.which I don't remember being possible..

If you need to replace the aux or adjust that it makes more sense..

You can usually find something on youtube. This gives some idea if what is involved may, altough the engine is out and access for tools is no problem. With the engine in situ, access is very restricted to removing some of the bolts, and you may have to be creative with your toolkit.



Key areas of difficulty may be removing the crankshaft pulley bolt. I never succeeded with mine, and ended up doing a bit of precision surgery on the plastic cambelt cover with a penknife to remove the cover. This allowed me to replace the belt without removing the crankshaft pulley.

Finding the hole to lock the flywheel is very much easier with the starter motor removed.

From experience I would always replace the water pump whether it needs replacing or not. A siezed water pump pulley can end up destroying the cambelt.

Never had a problem removing the pulley, it may not be the approved way but if you use a long bar with the appropriate socket and rest the end on the ground towards the front and give the starter a quick blip - undoes it every time.

Even if it is not seized it is worth replacing the water pump. According to what I have read here (and elsewhere) the pump almost invariably starts to leak if it is disturbed in any way (such as when the belt gets changed). I have not had the pleasure of changing a timing belt yet.
