I think I should at least take a look Jim.. underneath it all its just a 4cyl diesel really..
The problem is that head destruction plus turbo plus oil pupmp plus gaskets plus plus etc could be expensive..
Edit... ouch.. depending on damage 1500£ so far
On a different note does anyone know much about the 6 speed autobox? I wonder if it would struggle having had no oil changes like the 4hp20 etc..
Edit .. I think 8l at around £10pl

Re: new addition to fleet
Does the 6-speed auto have an easily accessible oil filter John?
Seems autoboxes on diesels last longer anyway. I know of a 2.0HDi Pug 407 with an HP20 and that's done over 200K on the original 'box...

Re: new addition to fleet
thanks Jim.. no idea but hopefully my engine will be on the floor over the weekend..will take some pics.. the boxes are a fair bit of money second hand so I don't want to lose an opportunity to do any useful work on it, cash providing..
I am moving back towards dropping the second hand engine in now.. as long as I can get a receipt explaining who, what, when, what from and the engine number..
I don't think I am being unreasonable in asking for this from the breaker really.. unless there is something to hide...
if I am careful to make sure the sensitive parts are clean, even taking the sump off, maybe I can drive reliably and keep the oil fresh..
nightmare

Re: new addition to fleet
I "think" on the engine, you just tell DVLA what the new number is and they update your V5.
It may also be possible for the DVLA to give you the MOT mileage of the car with that engine in it.
Have you tried talking to the help line ? IMHO they are quite good.

Re: new addition to fleet
Haven't yet sf.. needed the engine number but not got it yet.. was just a bit worried supplying an engine number after fitting and dvla telling.me engine was nicked and car pounded or something.. unlikely I guess.. but would be gutting

The I think even more so that DVLA would be able to tell you what in required.
I wonder what they would do in a case like that ?, that said ALL breakers are quite strict regarding "reporting", with VOSA, DVLA, Environmental and the Police all having easy access to their office 24hrs a day

Re: new addition to fleet
yeah I agree.. the seller is a family business, selling engines all day on ebay, from Cat B insurance salvage.. I tend to over worry or under worry, never quite find the center line
I went and brought it.. engine parts for this are so expensive still. (£300 plus for a second hand alternator I think!). I took a gamble and fingers crossed I have halved the mileage of my car, and legally....
turns up Friday.. will take a while to move things from one to the other but at least its easier with both on the ground..
Will do what I can to help the new motor, but I don't feel like stripping it down to inspect it really... maybe take sump off and clean the oil from it..
as far as my original goes.. I have left the tougher things for tomorrow and Friday eve.. driveshafts, exhaust, any other business underneath... top side I am mostly there...
fingers crossed...

Jim.. 2.0hdi 8v engines used al4s 4 speed box... where 2.0 hdi 16v used Aisins 6 speed box..CitroJim wrote:Does the 6-speed auto have an easily accessible oil filter John?

2.2 hdis strangely stayed with ZFs hp20 4 speed box. So makes more sense to go 2.0 16v hdi with 6 gears.
sadly though even aisins auto boxs do fail and give headaches!!!
so john you have Aisins 6 speed box.. from japan..

Re: new addition to fleet
I think the filter is easy to get to.. pics soon..
chaps I have come up against the usual problem tonight.. the long driveshaft of doom..
Last time the problem was the intermediate (V6 406 a few years ago) .. so tonight I went straight at that, and no probs.. no more hockey sticks either..
with that moving I turned attention to the hubs.. the hub nut was relatively loose, I didn't need a puller on the driveshaft either.. I removed the bottom outer joint (just a bolt now!)
the hub was swinging around, the driveshaft splines were moving within the hub but I couldn't get enough clearance to separate shaft from hub to get shaft out..
I went at the track rod joint.. its out now and the track rod need replacing..
but still no joy..
Helppp
all that is left is probably the drop links, but costs are mounting
how do you all deal with the longer driveshaft for engine removal is the question I guess.. - remove the intermediate bearing housing from the block is all that's left and I have avoided that so far..

Re: new addition to fleet
the driveshaft is now free from hub.. had to loosen the strut bolts at top, and then find my puller and push the shaft out of hub.. then prise it loose.. no problems with that but will be impossible to put back, maybe lower arm removal is the only way.. basically everything on the strut is loose or removed to get the shaft in/out

Re: new addition to fleet
I am glad to hear it Jim
thought I was being a bit silly !
Will have to buy some female torx sockets (whatever they are called) so lower arm can move outwards next week if/for reassembly..

They're called 'star' drive sockets John...jgra1 wrote: Will have to buy some female torx sockets (whatever they are called) so lower arm can move outwards next week if/for reassembly..
And the sizes are 'E and a number' such as 'E10'

John: That is a lot of hassle, time and money, for a car that is always going to cry for more of the same.

Re: new addition to fleet
Its an interesting read I was starting to think I was the only one to work on C series so new.. but its good to read someone else is ahead of me now..
X7 jobs ive done.. bottom bush on the fixed hub I think it was... and re cable a passenger window winder.. which is all very owner friendly to do.. even the motor seperates from the cable assey at last unlike xantia and xm winder units.
