James, I meant to say... Giles looked nothing like I thought.. I always imagined him looking like one of his cartoon characters...

Used to enjoy his cartoons...

I still do. My cousins have lots of his books. One of his best cartoons was brilliantly self deprecating. It was not long after D Day, and he had been sent over to document things. The cartoon is question is an irate looking officer, saying something like "I asked for a platoon, and got a bleedin' War Artist!", with a small, scruffy man sitting at an easel.

One thing he refused point blank to do was to draw any of the concentration camps (nothing would ever change his mind). He said that that would (in modern language) trivialise what had happened there, and that the photographs that had been published explained thing more clearly than words (or cartoons) could ever do. He met Josef Kramer (Belsen commandant), and Kramer gave him his Lugar pistol. Kramer said he admired Giles' work.

Of Course you might expect the Germans to go one better with 2 dorsal fins and a herringbone arrangement of the seating just to continue the fish theme.

I lived in one of those for four years while I rebuilt a derelict stone cottage, might have a picture somewhere in my files.

I watched AR, and the car is an Elva Courier. Believed to be the only one in the UK.
