You would need to be careful testing the oil cooler with your compressor. I'm guessing the cooling system runs at of the order of 10-15psi, whereas the compressor will develop 120-150 psi, unless your compressor allows you to pre-set the output pressure to a nice low psi. Would it be worth just substituting another oil cooler?
good call re compressed air but my compressor does have a regulator on it, but always worth a word of caution - thank you. I could fit a replacement yes but It wouldn't prove anything unless my cooling circuit was back to being spotlessly clean. If I can test the oil cooler and it IS faulty then it saves me lot of work regarding head skimming!

Maybe I do worry too much BX but I need this car to be reliable. Returning to work and sporadic ill health means I'd rather deal with oil in coolant issues to ensure I've taken the right corrective action.

Sorry Geoff if my remark appeared too flippant. It was not meant that way. Sometimes we get a little bit carried away trying to do the job too well. I have often spent hours getting something perfect in a situation where others would do it in an hour and out the door. At the end of the day a customer will only pay what they perceive to be the going rate. Things can go to greater extremes when working on your own vehicles. Sometimes we need to do the job to a reasonable standard and get on with using the car. Bear in mind that what you may consider rough and ready is probably a high standard for many garages. If they were to do all their work to such high standards customers would not be able to afford it. Hence brake pads in 20 minutes, clutches in under 2 hours.
Good luck with your return to work and I hope your health situation improves.
