I will upgrade one of my laptops as soon as I have time..

I must confess I've not logged into Ubuntu recently as I've been exclusively using Windows 10...

 Traitor!

Actually I did encounter a problem, not sure of tha cause.
I generally do a clean install from a USB dongle but thought I'd try a DVD again - that option hasn't worked for ages, always get the message that the CD drive is already mounted and unavailable (only for the starup disc creator).
It looked good but no go - then I saw the reported capacity for the DVD was 2kb

Tried several different makes of DVD and all the same.
Towel thrown in, burned to a dongle but it couldn't boot from the dongle :?:

Online upgrade then. All went swimmingly there.

Don't worry, I still have Fedora and Ubuntu here and in use when there's really serious stuff to do

I've seen that CD problem on Ubuntu many times Steve most often when trying to write a CD and with the Startup Disk creator...

It's often because there is already one session open to the CD in something else...

It's annoying...

Ditto on making a bootable USB stick. See that problem as well as writeable media reporting silly amounts of free space...

Fully little bugs...

Never had a problem with USB Jim, it has always just worked.
I did wonder if the DVD drive was a bit buggered. I bought a load of Sony CDs and they don't work in the car but older (mainly RiDisk) do.

Just been reading Techrepublic to see what new stuff there might be and have to say I haven't noticed anything personally.
No fireworks then.
Quite happy with it as it stands.

Still been using arch, though almost went exclusively back to windows 10 last week. After moving and getting the fibre up and running I decided to do a full upgrade of everything. I was previously sticking to kernel 3.18 as the newer ones seemed to have random issues for me.
After the upgrade, It was getting really bad for me where chrome's CPU usage would stay high on it's gpu process. And it would often lock up after being idle. Firefox was better but it often seemed laggy.

As a last ditch effort with failing to be able to get down to 3.18 (X would lock up immediately without loading gdm) I tried going for Linux-mainline (essentially closer to the edge kernels).
This seemed to make a marked improvement. Chrome doesn't seem to lock up any more and only occasionally has it's gpu process using a lot of CPU.. Firefox's performance seems to be better too.

I'm still liking Windows 10 a lot Ben. So far it's not missed a beat :D

Maybe because a laptops with Fedora and Ubuntu remain close by and ready to step into any breach...

Well, this evening I set about updating my desktop from Ubuntu 10.04 to Mint 17.2 LTS.

Ran Rsync to make sure my backups were all up to date, then went and downloaded the image.

Booted from the USB stick, connected to the internet so it could get updates etc, clicked install and then let it do its thing. 20 minutes or to later, I've got a system that's back up and running and is now copying files back over from the backup drive.

Nice that I've finally been able to start getting my workstation properly set up. Hoping to add a shelf over the desk tomorrow for the audio gear currently hiding behind the chair and figure out where on earth the mouse for the Amiga is hiding, likewise where its serial cable has vanished to.

Will let you know how I get on with it over the next couple of days as I get random bits of software reinstalled and such. Thus far it's seeming to work fine just out the box so to speak.

Well I figured it's somewhere I'm likely to be sitting for long periods of time, so may as well be comfy!

Will need to think about replacing it at some point though as the stitching has started to come apart in a few places now. Not complaining really, it came out of a 120K mile car and I've had nearly ten years out of it! Should be easy to bolt pretty much anything onto the base as well.

Well, I reckon the next seat will need a decent 12V power supply, to manage the positioning and heating equipment!

Nothing electric getting involved here...this thing is already one of the most annoyingly heavy and cumbersome things in the world as it is...the weight of electric adjusters in there would probably have resulted in me losing patience with it long ago.

Guess on the plus side we don't plan on moving again any time soon (or ever) so at least it can just stay where it is now.
