Plugs were my first thought but i've read they only really kick in at low temps!

The diesel smelling smoke means it isn't combusting properly or theres an injector leaking

Can you get it on diagnostics & read the fuel rail pressure when it's not starting ? Needs a bare minimum of 110 bar to think about starting.

If my memory is correct, the HDi engine needs 150bar on the fuel rail before the injectors are allowed to work. This is according to this document I found;

The document says it needs minimum 120 bar to operate the injectors, the 150 bar is when pressure regulation starts

The requirements for all common rail diesels are similar but there can be variations between different engines and different injection systems. I am quite familiar with the various quirks and failings of the bosch common rail injection on certain psa and mb engines. Even though i am driving a 2l hdi with Siemens injection and have put over 190000miles on it, i know nothing about the Siemens system and i hope it stays that way. You need to look at the live data with your car attempting to start and when running. Check rail pressure, intake air temp, coolant temp and injector corrections or trim.

Non Return Valve also didnt help. Tomorrow iam going to check engines cylinder compression and i willl give more info.
