It keeps saying there are four new notifications but there is nothing there to see.

Re: Computer operating systems
Ahh, I see. It's just a case of familiarity Steve.. I spend all day at work on Windows so I know the OS very well and all the little shortcuts. I agree that without that knowledge some tasks do seem a bit complex compared to Ubuntu.
First job on any Windows 10 install is to install Firefox (or Chrome if that is preferred) and Thunderbird and then uninstall any third-party AV product and allow Windows Defender to do the job. Those in that area of the IT profession say so...
I dumped McAfee off my Win 10 today after receiving the yearly subscription renewal advice for £60
No way for something that slows down the machine with never ending scans and relentless pop-ups.. It seems hell-bent on wearing out the hard disk!
Akso, check there's no rubbish that runs at startup/login that's not needed... Most of the crap that slows down a Windows box is comes in the form of so-called web taskbars and advert 'helpers' that run as soon as windows boots up . It can be hard to find as most is only in the registry but a quick 'net search will tell you where to look...
Getting rid of the crap can make an order of magnitude of a difference...
Don't understand why youtube won't work unless a third-party AV product is stopping it...

Re: Computer operating systems
Firefox was already installed as was Chrome. I probably put them on when she bought the laptop.
No 'helpers' installed. It does have Avast and -something else, forget what but it's OK -
Took a look at what was running and there's nothing that should cause problems - going to dump the AVs and install Microsoft Security Essentials although when I bought this laptop with W7 on it that caused a few problems.
It is just such a pile of unnecessary twaddle, stuff leaping out at you but things you want are buried deep. Far too much bling.
I'm glad someone else is going to have to deal with it. Shame it is my daughter - she will likely practice kick boxing with it.
I did actually have a look in Janet's facebook page - she used it for a site called Whitby Memories - and found she had loads of birthday greetings there.
Her birthday was Sept 19th. She died on May 29th.
Perhaps I should tell them.

Re: Computer operating systems
I have had no problems with Avast free version on windows 10 (or earlier versions). The only app that has been a bit unhappy is Thunderbird, which occasionally locks up in the background and required the process to be killed before it will restart.

Re: Computer operating systems
I don't use Thunderbird - did a while back but now just use webmail - a couple of Gmail accounts, a couple of Yahoo accounts and an ancient Hotmail account that I check twice a year
Laura would be unlikely to use it anyway.

Re: Computer operating systems
I love Thunderbird for email.. It is truly excellent and now has Outlook-esque calendaring functions..
Outlook I use for calendaring though simply because it so easily syncs with my Windows Mobile Phone...

My current choice on Android is K9-Mail... I looked at many to find one I liked but can't recall looking at Aquamail..xantia_v6 wrote:Similarly I love aquamail on any android device
I must as K9 is not perfect. I only wish T-bird was available for Android...

I don't dislike Thunderbird but have no need of it anymore.
Rarely bother with calendering but for the rare occasions use my phone or the Google one.

Re: Computer operating systems
Call me old-fashioned but I do like my proper email clients although I do use Squirrelmail (an Open-Source web mail server that runs under LAMP) to access my own email away from home and the web-based Outlook for my Hotmail as well as Googlemail for my Google account.. I'm not a fan of the Googlemail client at all.. In fact, bar their search engine, I'm not a fan of Google much at all really...
I guess it's all down to personal preferences...
Reminds me. I must check my Googlemail...

Re: Computer operating systems
Well, the Toshiba laptop with W10 went to it's new owner today after some intensive soak testing.
Glad to see the back of it!
Upgraded Ubuntu to 15.10. Took around 30 minutes download, install and clean up and I was online the whole time until it asked to reboot, which took 40 seconds. Everything works just as it did before, not the slightest glitch.

Not that I have seen yet.
Haven't explored it yet though.
