Oil seal

Post by stevec5 »

I've got a new oil-seal to fit to the diff - but the new seal has a plastic ring fitted to one end which looks like a set of fingers bent back in towards the seal, I am assuming this plastic ring fits to the outside of the diff - am I correct?

This is referred to in the C15 Haynes manual (so I assume others) in the replacing driveshaft section.

In the event my oilseal didn't have one, so can't speak from personal experience but, from memory, you ignore it until after final assembly - then tear it off.

Is that seal for the right hand side?

yes, "fingers" to the outside of gearbox as seen in this picture --> oil seal for my gear box (BE3R)
Pic shows the old seal before removal.

Re: Oil seal

The gear box type for my car is a ML6C, the seal is for the left side - the right side seal (accepting the long dive shaft) has a metal circular plate fused to the outer face of the seal. The seal in question is pressed into a flange which is fastened to the gearbox/diff with 4 screws. I wonder whether the plastic fingers help to guide the driveshaft centrally through the seal when refitting to avoid damaging the sealing lip. Thanks for the replies.

Same box as mine and I need same seal which was why I asked. I think you are right on fingers centralising the shaft.
My confusion was that I thought those fingers were on that long shaft and a plain seal was on short nearside one.

I'm not sure the oilseals are handed but think whether or not they have that plastic ring depends on the manufacturer.

If I'm wrong, then I've used the wrong seal - but it seems to work just fine & I really can't see what difference it makes (or was I just lucky?)

I had some discussion on gearbox oil seals and the differences in them, when I changed the driveshafts on my c5.

Should either be in my c5 profile (see signature) or linked from there. Have a look and see if that helps? (i can't remember now - I've had 3 other different cars apart since then  )

I think you will be ok. The shafts are same dia each side? It seems that the different PN on C5 come from the add on bits. If Citroen stick these 2 items together it does get a new PN. What I would like to know is if you can buy the old Left side seal and just press it inside your old 4 bolt flange, instead of buying flange with seal fitted.

I've pressed new oil seal into flange with no problems - can't see anything wrong with doing this.

That'll do for me Steve.
One further question. Even with suspension in low and car jacked up under sill, I never get the drive shaft into a horizontal position. With the drive shaft being lower at wheel end than gearbox, does this not impede driving it outside in, towards gearbox, to free it? It is helluva crooked. It may be the jacking up that does this?

Not sure what you are getting at / trying to do Lexi? Split the bottom ball joint then pull the hub and shaft outwards to pull it out of the diff. Once out of the way, lever the old seal out, then press the new one in - I usually use a flat piece of wood and a hammer to drive it in flush. Then just guide the shaft back in through the seal - it needs a firm push to seat it properly. Note the LH and RH seals are not the same size. If doing the RH one (long shaft) you will need to disengage the intermediate bearing. It's probably easier to remove the whole shaft anyway - you are only the hub nut away from doing this, and it makes more room to work at the box end.

Richard: I am renewing outer CV boot on n/s. I wanted the diff seal in case I have to pull the shaft to get stretch boot on. I have the cone etc.
I can break the hub nut, 2 ball joints and drop link easy. I like room to work rather than struggle in tight spots. I thought that the driveshaft pushed in through the outer hub after nut and pin were removed? There are a few bits that look in the way like Handbrake cable?
If I thought it easy to do a stretch boot down there with room, while on the knees, I might do it.
Is it not better brought to the bench and I can change gearbox oil too?

Once the hub is from the ball joint, there should be enough room to pull the hub outwards to free it from the shaft. You might need to remove the handbrake cable from the hub - can't remember if I had to when I changed an ABS ring on the Xantia. I think you are right though, it will be easier to pull the shaft on this side and work on the bench, rather than fight it on the car.
