Beginning of rusty door jams???

Hi All,
So do these photos show the start of the dreaded rust from behind? This rust was not there a year ago.

Yup .... thats it alright. It'll eat through in no time at all and you'd never know it unless you use the rear doors often. Better get dinitrolling....

A little work now will save more later. It is rare that when there is staining as you have, that the problem has to be removed.
Also, with staining like that it looks like there is a large moisture trap/source close by.

Personally, now is the time to investigate some more.


Why the screw in the lower edge ?

That looks like a pop rivet to me ... is that patched up and sprayed already i wonder?

Oh heck, just as I was getting her looking nice!!

have no idea about the screw/rivet, never had any damage there in the last 14 years, it's the same on the other side although not so obvious. Always wondered why this one 'seam' (both sides) on the car was so 'rough and ready' and so easily seen. Car owned by Citroen in Slough for the first year then a chap in Gloucester for 3 years then me, bought through the Citroen dealer in Gloucester.

So can I extract or wash out the mud etc. from behind the area somehow then rust treat/proof before blocking the hole in the wheel arch?

"Citroen in Slough" probably means it was a company car .. Mine had that as the first owner.. but I was driving it before I bought it.

If its been 'done' before then that might make it an easier exercise this time around. I'm sure that someone mentioned going into that section via the seat belt mounting points ...

Nothing has been done there in the past 14 years, my husband says the screw/rivet marks are spot welds and he thinks that they forgot to but the sealant along the edge to make it look 'pretty'.

I can see no problem getting to the area on the left hand side but the right hand side has pipes there, so perhaps that's where the seat belt mounting points come in?

Typical isn't it, I've just had a quote to spray the spoiler (the yellow boomerang http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... 0&start=15 ) I bought last year to 'finish' the car, although now I fancy Morettes headlights as well!! Oh well, three steps forward and two back, but I guess that should be two steps forward and three back with elderly Citroens

It's really not the end of the world you know.
I've just thoroughly attacked the same area on mine (which was much, much worse than yours) and it was quite a pleasure to do (I cut every bit of rust out and welded in replacement sections).

To stop the same happening again I have drilled two holes so I can really get the cavity wax to where it needs to be.

I've drilled one at the lowest point of the sill so I could flood the box section of the sill and one on the top of that slope on the quarter panel section (in the door shut) so I could get some into the spot welded join where the quarter panel meets the sill (exactly where yours in going).

Sealed these holes up with a couple of blanking grommets to keep the water out.

It's the welding that most people are going to crib at. My TD has a patched rear arch but its less than tidy. Served to get her through mot but from an aesthetic pov...

The welding is the problem, OH hasn't welded anything for donkeys years, it will have to be the local garage, who I am happy to say have realised this car is not going anywhere anytime soon and certainly pulled all the stops out getting the clutch as light as possible for me.

We are going to investigate the condition inside from the hole in the wheel arch tomorrow. I wondered if it is feasible to enlarge this hole for better access, presuming it is not a stress point since Citroen put a hole there, and when all work done (whether by us or the garage) make a removable metal cover, if possible, self tapping screws and CT1 sealant that can be removed and the condition inside checked each year??? What do you think

I will order Dinitrol unless there is anything else you guys consider a better bet?

Assuming there is rot inside):

I think the best way is a mobile welding service if you don't like the idea yourself, prepare the area for them, get the panels ready and ask them to weld it up.

I would not put an access into that area other than a hole for spray wax, it needs to be strong and solid.

Never heard of mobile welders here in France, quite a few services like that you can get in the uk but not here. So it will have to be the local Peugeot garage, quite happy with that if needed. Dealt with major rust on my second car (avenger ,OMG 33 years ago) so understand the possible severity - had to cut back the wings to good metal on that, used fibre glass etc. not a pretty job but I learnt a lot, I was 17 and it was school summer holidays, I found it fun!!! Sad

Looking at Dinitrol via Rust.co.uk and they reckon the best rust convertor is FE-123 not the Dinitrol one, any comments?
Obviously Dinitrol 3125 wax is needed.
