Completely OT : Any beetle experts out there?

Post by superloopy »

This it curled up .. its just over 1/2" long body wise.

Image

And on the move ..

Driving me mad. Over the past few weeks we've had to eject one of these weekly from the house. Only ever one but as i'm loathe to crush any of them it's becoming deja-vu time. I even dumped the last one 20yards from the house but am getting paranoid that this IS the same bug returning each time and may need to tag this one when i release it [emoji1]. Have tried googling but a lot of bugs look v.similar. This one just plays dead for about 5mins each time you wiggle it or with any vibrations. C'mon someone must know what it is [emoji1]

I don't know what it is, though should be relatively easy to ID it online, with a bit of time. http://www.naturespot.org.uk/taxonomy/term/19338 http://www.uksafari.com/beetles.htm

I would suspect these are new beetles having hatched from larvae and are now off to find their new mates and start a family of their own.

It looks fairly adult to me though. No signs of any larval (?) activity in the house. It would have to come from a fairly large pupa given that its around 7-8mm long.

Agreed, I think vine or common leaf weevil. No Beetle expert I just looked at pictures.

From this Google Images search this one looks closest:

And is a Hermit Flower Beetle - or so they claim.

I do agree that it is some sort of weevil though.

I'd say it's a Vine Weevil

Image

....no, that's not a life size fully grown adult one :rofl2:

You need to jump up and down on it - they make a satisying noise when you do so. You need to repeat this procedure for every other one you find as well :) There's not a lot of good things to be said about Vine weevils.

I would say that it is a VW Beetle, as it is trying to hide from the US Authorities! Their Chief Executive Officer has resigned.

Well at half and inch long its too big for the furniture beetle, even a well-nourished one is only 0.18 inches in length. Apparently the adults do not feed just reproduce, and presumably expire shortly afterwards.

Well done that man who called it as a vine weevil =D> =D> =D>

Looks exactly llike the one(s) i've been seeing and could be explained by the proliferation of pots and hanging baskets around the property this year :)

Never seen them before but thereagain never had much vegetation in flower before so that explains that.

And to think that i've been sympathetically putting them back outside believing them to be good for the garden, it's not true!!

They're a pest of the highest order and will be extinguished on sight in future

As for a cure .... nematodes i'm thinking longer term. Coincidentally my daughter has just been out tonight 'nematoding' her rear lawn to get rid of the slug infestation, there's thousands out there at night!!

If you dont believe me take a look outside now :-D :-D :-D

I have lotts of slugs here, will look into the nematode option.

The bloke next door was stood on his doorstep one evening recently, as he is wont to do  and noticed a small army of large slugses gliding past him and up a sycamore tree outside his house.
Loads of slime trails up and down the tree trunk.

The following morning they all came down and disappeared into the ground again.

Horrible things. My son discovered several in our kitchen last week. All airbricks and other possible entrances blocked up and much salt distributed around.
Of around a thousand seedlings and bedding plants put out only around fifty survived them- swet peas mainly.

Nematodes it is then!

You could try tempting hedgehogs into your gardens, but you don't have long before they start hibernating.

Basically, you've got three options...... Nematodes, a club hammer to hit the little buggers with, or concrete over the garden. :-D

In a former life I used to work in greenhouses - vine weevil and mealybugs were the two most troublesome pests we had to deal with, and chemical warfare was the usual answer to them
