Activa ram advice needed.

Unread post by superloopy »

Found my brand spanking new front ram which has lay hidden in the shed for 5 years! I'm going to swap out the leaking front ram on my poorly S2 Activa. But ... what preparation, if any, do i need aside from plusgassing each and every nut and bolt i can see? Unlikely there's any pressure 'activa side' left as it hasnt been up for a couple if years and is nearly on its belly now. But ... SWMBO is again making noises and i really need to get this moving if not altogether roadworthy ASAP! Currently she leaves a puddle of lhm each time i fire her up and the missus is not amused. All advice appreciated.

Mike, yes, get lots of plus gas going and there will be pressure in the Activa system that will cause wonderful sprays... I find it best to discharge the pressure by loosening either a ram union at the end of the pipe or at the Activa Accumulator by undoing the union going into the sphere and allowing the pressure to bleed away.. have a drip tray under...

The front ram pipe unions - where they go from the flexy hoses to the metal pipes can be very tight and difficult... I find a good 21mm and 17mm flare spanner is what's needed and you may need to apply heat but beware - LHM burns very well indeed!!!

My Ram Repair Guide on page one contains some good info on front (and rear) ram removal/refitting...

On reassembly ensure the flexi pipes are routed correctly else they will chafe...

Have fun and any problems, you know where I am..

Moving this to the Activa area...

You will be in need of the bush as well I would expect.

You can get them from the Peugeot dealer...:)

My advise would be this; Don't ram an Activa, there are less than 80 left!

Good thinking James! :-D

Yes, front now but when Mike comes to the rear ram the fun might start but at least the reseal can be done more or less in-situ... Getting at the flexi unions, as you know Alasdair, without resorting to a tin-opener is a game and a half...

The front is the easier one...

Mike, don't bin the old rams as 99 times out of a hundred they can be repaired... Send them down to me for safe keeping

Also, one of the Land Rover guys down here is a bit of a wizz on rebuilding rams etc on old tractors and is willing/wanting to have a good look at one and work out a rebuild procedure.......he is fascinated by the system.

He has by chance lots of tools for such jobs, he says the top ball joint is easy to replace for example and does not believe he cannot do a total rebuild...basically he says if they go together they come apart and will go together again in the same way :)

I was going to give him one of mine, but if there is a totally scrap one about, that may be better....so do not chuck it mate even if horrid :)

I've a totally scrap one Alasdair, I think, and he's very welcome to have a play with it... I'll bring it next time I'm down your way. I expect that to be a couple of weeks...

Had an hour at removing front ram and then gave up. Need a plan b. Botttom nut spun off no probs but that top one is only going half way up its thread and i'm scared of rounding off the hex if i put too much strain on trying to hold it. There's not much room to even cut the nut a little. So gents ... any pointers? I've left it well doused in plusgas but doubt it'll help.

Yep......screw it back again with grease on the thread....then a new nut on top, rotate that as far down as poss to clean the top threads...remove and that take the old one back up/off over some more (little wipe) grease on the threads.
