Well, when I asked Citronut (may he rest in peace) what he would suggest, he told me he normally packs them out with Moly Grease (to massively extend the life of the bearings).

The service citroen site calls it a seal protector but the seals are on the outside, not inside the arm!!
Could it just be a cheap/lightweight method of filling the space to reduce the volume of grease needed to pack the bearings adequately?
I think you're probably right...........

Re: C5 Rear Arm Bearings

Drivers side all sorted, all back together nicely............however.........passenger side proving to be a PITA.

Have undone everything but the suspension connecting rod at the end of the gaiter where it fits into the trailing arm is just seized solid.

Have plus gassed it, hammered it, levered it and it wont budge at all!!!

Does anyone know if the connecting rod is attached to the piston in the suspension cylinder or is it possible to remove it and take it out with the trailing arm without getting LDS everywhere.

I'm sure I could get it out when its off the car.

Sometimes I wonder if it would have been easier to take it to the garage...!!!

Thanks

Re: C5 Rear Arm Bearings - GETS WORSE........!!!!

Post by hamster99 »

Well, trailing arm now off the car but things are getting worse in that the outer bearing had completely destroyed itself with the taper bearings liberally scattered about and seeming to have made the hole in the arm rather more oval than round.

Looks like I may have to replace the whole arm............rather annoyingly I only had my old C5 taken away a few months ago.....typical....!!!

Now I have to find an arm........anybody breaking a C5...?????

Or can point me in the direction of a decent breakers who would have one.

Whereabouts are you Rob - can make a big difference in the recommendations for scrapyards.
Malcolm (citronut) knew of a good one. I'll see if I can find it.

Finally managed to get a replacement rear arm, installed new bearings etc and now ready to stick it on the car.

However, the pushrod that sits in the suspension cylinder fits into a socket on the arm itself but fell out rather easily when I took the arm off the donor car. Fine I thought, it will, just go back in but no, it seems to be like one of those impossible metal puzzles.

No matter what angle I place the pushrod at, the end won't go into the socket...!!!

Anybody suggest a way to do this? I don't want to try brute force and break it, especially as it came out so easily on its own...!!!

if you loosen the bleed screw at center of axle, you should be able to push rod into cylinder, then tighten bleed screw again !
