Now I know why there was no response to my earlier post, somehow or other it seems to have got lost in the ether.

So, here we go again (as best I remember) checked out PU18: seems to be readily available, at a reasonable price, if you punt round - but only in industrial quantities.

Oh, & that drivetshaft I got: (a) it's the wrong one - I think earlier; anyone know if they're interchangeable?
(b) the inner boot's got a nick in it - which seems to be even more a performance to do

Where can I get those split boots? I've not seen them, not that I've been looking, for years?

Any thoughts on obtaining ANOTHER driveshaft - Northants is too far to go specially, even to return one.

I got the complete kit from eBay, less than a tenner. Not done yet, but the car is up on stands with the wheels off to do the brakes, so if it is dry tomorrow I will be under it having a go!

The BBC long-range farmers forecast yesterday morning at 05:57 was wrong... Very wrong...

Sorry Davie  I used to trust the BBC weather Forecasts as gospel...

If it's any consolation, they got ours wrong too :(

No doubt, but by the time I get round to the next job, will it be any good?

My experience of stuff in cartridges is that it's intended to be used in one hit or, at least, within the working week.

Mind you, for £3, it's just possible that's worthwhile, even if it only gets you out of schtuk once.

It seems to be like silicone sealant. As long as you seal the nozzle after use (I use clingfilm), only a bit near the tip cures, the rest seems to last quite well.

Unfortunately, that's not been my experience with silicone sealants which I've known set hard (well, rubbery) even with nozzles with screw caps!

It's been decent weather here today, I had things to do earlier on so it was after 4 before I looked at the pug. The brakes on the passenger side front a bit seized up also, so took them all out then looked at the driveshaft boot. I decided that there was not enough room to do it in place so I undid the ball joint so I could get the driveshaft out to replace the boot. Unfortunately though I twisted my back under there and have had to stop. It could be a few days or more before I have another look at it

Just watched a video of fitting a boot using a cone (something I was only previously aware of). Hadn't realised the trick (technique?) is to turn boot inside out. True you've still got to get the shaft out the hub but not sure that's not the way to go.

Never found any of those split boots on e-bay BUT did find some very reasonably priced driveshafts on-line (try Mr-Auto.co.uk) - so that's me sorted. Except there's the small matter of the hole in the inner boot on the s/h shaft I'm not bow going to use.

Cones are great and the other secret is to grease them and the boot really well. It's a messy old job but by golly, it gets the job done..

On 205 shafts it's almost essential as the spider on one end (can't recall which now) is fixed to the shaft so the joint cannot be fully dismantled to fit a boot conventionally...
