Does the gearbox just pull off or are there any 'fittings' involved. Mine's not looking good but i'm fearful i'll smash it. Once tried to clean it up in situ but made a pigs lug of it.

I just (sharply) turned it to the left and it lifted off....it has left the plastic on the stick. I do not know if that is the correct way but that's what epoxy is for :)

Nice job on the knob Alasdair :-D Most I see are really grotty and it spoils the whole car. Mine is fine but I guess it has been refurbished with some really good varnish in the past - by the previous owner maybe...

Before and fitted.
Image

One note, to remove the knob, PULL UP after releasing the gear stick gaiter___DO NOT Twist it as this will shear the lugs off the plastic...which had been done on mine hence the confusion.

This removes the Knob with the gaiter attached, put the knob in a vice (protect it) and pull up on the plastic sleeve that attaches to the metal stick and fits inside the knob

Yeh.....to see what I thought of taking the whole unit back to black from the metallic grey they are now.

I will be switching the whole mirror units to satin black, the test convinced me that they grey is way to "modified" for me and a little to chav ......needless to say it is now bugging the cr4p out of me every time I look at it :)
